Checking for RTX 3080 is like playing a slot machine.

Seriously, you click over and over and eventually see “add to cart” just for it to be broken. While it’s no doubt unintentional, the amount of buzz around this release combined with the sketchy method of trying to actually get lucky enough to buy one of these is playing off the same psychological triggers as casinos have for people gambling.
Still trying to get one though 🤦‍♂️

Why do so many gamblers play the lottery or slot machines if the expected value is way less compared to equivalent stock option gambles?

Edit : just want to clarify what I mean by options trades. I mean you can come up with parallel or sequential (double or nothing) gambles on an asset that expires in a day or two and leverage yourself doing that. Time to maturity can be arbitrarily small and sensitivity to an assets price movement as well. It doesn't take months.
Let's assume that someone wants to gamble: Bet a certain amount of money and randomly lose the bet or gain additional money.
Obviously, the house always wins in aggregate and so the expected value playing slot machines cannot be neutral or positive. I once crunched the numbers and found out that my state lottery on average pays out approx. 10 cents for every dollar spent (large sample size).
For both of these gambling methods, I can come up with an options trade where the outcome has a similar distribution, but where the trader doesn't lose the insane amount of equity as in the lottery and slot machines.
If it's the ease of doing a trade, someone could just design a website that automatically generates the trade or explains in simple steps how to do it.

Unpopular opinion but Tifa was my least favorite character to play as in the OG. I didn’t like the slot machine mechanics for her limit breaks. BUT...she is one of my favorite to play as in the remake.

"Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine" is an iPhone exclusive game that stopped getting updates in 2013 and I'm on a hunt to play it again!

"Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine" is an abbreviated name. The real name is "Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine of Diamonds & Gold Treasure Free for iPad and iPhone." The name is just too long and the last part is true but redundant.
The game is a gold/diamond panning sim which plays using the gyroscope in an iPhone to move a pan of rocks, fake diamonds, real diamonds, and gold and search for the most valuable diamonds hidden among the worthless rocks. It's a grindy game, but it's an amazing "car ride" game. I haven't played it in 4 years at least and I've been thinking about it ever since it stopped working. There are probably some videos of game play but I will let you look it up since it doesn't require an archaeological dig to find them on Youtube
The whole game cycle revolves around panning. You pan, you find some random rocks. A few gold pieces here a few possible diamonds there and some rocks. You take the gold (pretty easy) and use it as a currency for processing diamonds. You process diamonds by first checking if they are real or not. Most are fake, but you can use upgrades to improve your sifting abilities alongside other great things. After finding real diamonds, you can give them a cut to add value. Then they are added to your collection. You can either keep the diamonds as trophies, which improve your score and give you access to more places to pan, or you can sell them for a second currency which you use to buy upgrades and other diamonds (at a net loss though).
The game is really good. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's ego, but I've come to a discovery! There is a possibility that I can play the game again! I need an iPhone 6 and I need to revert it to IOS 8. Then I can download the game and run it! I've already considered other options (IOS 9 on a 6S could work but it might not work), but I'm sticking with it. I've already looked at some guides that seem like reverting an IOS is easy so I'll start working on it once I buy the phone. Funniest and kind of tragic thing was that I had to trade in my old iPhone 6 when I got a new one last year! I literally had it and didn't know I could've used it! I feel so stupid in retrospect.
I actually still have my old iPod 5 but it can't play the game. It technically runs, but it crashes after you stop panning and won't move forward I could revert that thing to 8 but the last update says it doesn't have enough RAM so I'm just gonna leave it.
Either way, I've figured out some cool info. After the last update, the game's download count was around 125,000. This means that there were definitely less than 150,000 people who bought the game. I can't give an exact percent, but I believe that those still playing number in the single digits after all the compatibility issues and years of the game being forgotten (that's likely why the creators quit working on it). This means that I could be one of the only people in the actual god damn world to play it. And if I so chose... I could do game play videos! I would have a monopoly!!! AAAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm gonna go mad with power! Funny thing is that I don't know how to make game play videos and grind games are only good as compilations with commentary.
It might be obsession IT IS AN OBSESSION! It might be nostalgic desperation, but I'm gonna play that game again, and I'll do a hell of a lot to get to the point I can play it. My only fear is that the game won't work no matter how much I do, but there is no reason to believe that will happen.
I'll do an update post once I've figured out if it's working or not. I'm already considering plan b, c, d, e, and f. Kidnap the devs and force them to update it. Pay a programmer to steal the game and reverse engineer it. Pay the devs and kidnap a programmer just cause I feel like it. I myself could learn to code in IOS and redo the game myself like a fucking madlad. I don't know how far this is going to go, all I need is that game.. I just want to play that game if only to remove this deep feeling of need. I hope it goes well, I just want this crazy adventure to reach it's apex moment when I finish the tutorial and begin my panning adventure again.

Optimal meta play feels like a slot machine, and the garden is left entirely behind

I've been playing for 6 days now, I've ascended 9 times, and I'm currently at around 50 billion prestige. I've been using what seems to be the optimal meta strategy, namely, optimizing for as many golden cookies as possible, and hoping for mega combos of Frenzy, building special, and one of Click Frenzy/Elder Frenzy, and then layering Godzamok on top. I've been using Force the Hand of Fate to help increase the chances of running into these mega combos; basically, every time I get a building special from a golden cookie, I cast Force the Hand if able to and hope for a Click or Elder Frenzy on top. If I get those, then I sell a bunch of buildings to Godzamok and get to clicking.
At this point I've unlocked almost all of the heavenly upgrades. The problem is that I've only gotten 6 sugar lumps over the time I've been playing, so I only have a level 2 Garden on top of my level 1 Temple and Wizard Tower. And I've only unlocked 8 seeds so far, so I don't even have much I can do in the Garden. Between the limited number of Garden slots, limited number of seeds I have so far, and many hours to mature even a single useful plant (which can exceed the optimal ascension time if I get the right mega combo), the Garden just hasn't been a factor at all. More broadly, sugar lumps haven't been a factor at all.
I'm at the point roughly where I'm going to have finished the game in a week, in the sense of unlocking all the Heavenly Upgrades and getting the good majority of the achievements. Everything after that is just an incremental improvement that, because of the sugar lump and garden plant mechanic, takes a lot more time, at least 10X the number of days that I've put in so far.
Is it intended that playing Cookie Clicker feels like playing a slot machine? Basically, you don't advance at all in any meaningful way until you get the right mega combo (which is mostly up to chance), at which point you advance enormously. It feels exactly like playing a Skinner box with a random reward ratio, i.e. a slot machine. Except the Cookie Clicker slot machine is ROI positive, so to extend the analogy, why would you ever bother working a day job at a normal wage of $20/hr (sugar lumps/Garden) when you could instead go play a slot machine and win millions of dollars reliably enough.
This seems to be the current state of the meta, and it's unfortunate that it essentially obsoletes several game mechanics (sugar lumps and garden) that would otherwise be pretty fun. Would it make sense to buff them so that they remain relevant with optimal meta play, i.e. reward sugar lumps on some basis that isn't just purely time-based, and add ways to mature plants faster so that they fit into the length of an optimal ascension? Or are these factors just balanced for the idle play style or ultimate endgame? The ultimate endgame has less appeal for me because, once I've unlocked all the heavenly upgrades, there's not so much fun in just pushing a number higher to no end; at that point, playing some other game is probably more fun.

With slot machines, however, the gameplay is almost identical whether you’re playing online or in-house. As slots are basically large computers, the game is more or less the same when you play via your personal computer, laptop, or tablet. If you’re searching for a winning slot machine strategy, let me disappoint you right from the beginning: there is no winning slots strategy. There’s a reason why casinos make the bulk of their profits from slots, and it’s because the game is always going to favor the house in the long run.
