Comprehensive Gou Theory: Satoshi Hojo, In The Hidden Room, With The Onigari-no-Ryuuou

Alright, here it is- my comprehensive mega theory on what I believe may have been happening through the whole of Gou that we have seen so far. It does involve crazy amounts of extrapolation and could very well be invalidated by the next episode.
TL;DR version - Shion is hiding Satoshi in her closet. Satoko knows. The Hojo brother is awake, crazy, running around and has been either directly or indirectly responsible for much of the bullshit in the arcs so far.
Now here it comes. The long version. The crack logic. Grab onto your baseball bats, buckle up your airsoft guns and don't let go.

:: BEFORE SERIES - JUNE 1982 ::
Satoshi Hojo kills his aunt Tamae and runs away. In the original Higurashi, he had contracted Hinamizawa Syndrome Level 5 and was subsequently abducted by the Yamainu and demoned away underneath the Irie Clinic.
Things happen differently in Higurashi Gou.
Satoshi doesn't completely hit L5 and actually runs away, fleeing for his life when the scary men-in-vans come to abduct him, taking his baseball bat along with him. The Yamainu successfully cover up his murder anyway, but because they botch their retrieval attempt Takano and Tomitake have been searching for him ever since.
How did he escape the Yamainu for a whole year?
He had a helper: Shion Sonozaki, his girlfriend. He told her he was being hunted by mysterious men-in-vans who murdered his aunt and who he had seen talking to Rika Furude.
Shion believed what he said.
Remembering her uncles had a saferoom in the Sonozaki Saiguden and family rumors of a secret passage leading outside the estate, she goes to her closest uncle - her employer at Angel Mort - and is able to acquire a copy of the key to the saferoom. She then sneaks Satoshi through the passage into the Sonozaki Saiguden and into the stockpiled saferoom, helping him disappear and hide from the Yamainu.
Satoshi has been hiding in the Sonozaki Saiguden ever since, using the same saferoom Keiichi was put into by Mion, living off the food rations stored in there and the resupplies brought by Shion, whenever she has the time to swap with Mion and make a visit.
How did he not succumb to Hinamizawa Syndrome for a whole year?
Shion Sonozaki finds out that like his sister, Satoshi was on "experimental medication". This is a problem, because she cannot take him directly to the Irie Clinic when he's supposed to be hiding. She comes up with an alternative plan - she suggest to Irie that, like his niece and nephew, their uncle Teppei Hojo may have the same illness that runs in the family, knowing this will prompt Irie to prescribe medication to the man.
She finds out where Teppei lives in Okinomiya and raids his mailbox every time there's a delivery, stealing the prescription and replacing it with generic tablets instead. She then brings the pills back to Satoshi every time she swaps places with Mion and gets to sneak into the estate, such as in Watanagashi-hen when Mion takes her place at Angel Mort.
Unfortunately, Satoshi's pills are only meant for "low-level" L1-L3 symptomatics. Anything higher requires Satoko's version, the C-103. With his murder of his aunt, Satoshi is now at the upper end of L3 or past it. Having Shion caring for him helps, but even with his pills, over the course of the year he slowly slips further and further into L4.
Thus come the events of Higurashi Gou, June 1983.

:: ALL ARCS - JUNE <10 ::
An older Rika Furude wakes up in the body of her younger self.
Satoko, as her best friend and someone who has been living in her house for a whole year, immediately realizes something is wrong with Rika. This is a Rika who has been openly acting like a teenager for years and can't quite fake being her 10-year self again enough to fool Satoko. But Satoko doesn't push the matter up front.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE <10 ::
Teppei has never met Rina Mamiya in these timelines. He lives by himself, but in Tataridamashi he gets evicted after the neighbors complain about the smell coming from his unit and he abuses the woman who came to check in.
He decides to move back to Hinamizawa.

:: ONIDAMASHI AND WATADAMASHI ARCS - JUNE 11 ::
Shion uses her weekend break to meet up with Satoshi, promising to treat Satoko in Okinomiya after visiting her brother in the saferoom. While Satoko and Shion visit Satoshi, Satoko mentions Rika was acting funny in the last few days and making phone calls to the police asking for some unknown guy named Akasaka.
With his Hinamizawa Syndrome at Level 4, this immediately triggers Satoshi's paranoia the moment he hears about it and he starts to believe Rika has been possessed by Oyashiro and is part of a massive conspiracy involving brainwashed police and the men-in-vans.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 11 ::
Because of the baseball game taking place, Shion decides to postpone the visit to Satoshi to the next day.
This is because it takes too long for them to find him a spare bat. Satoshi's old bat is not in his locker; he retained it on himself after killing Tamae Hojo and all while escaping the Yamainu. The bat seen in the locker in Gou's Episode 1 is not Satoshi's - it belongs to one of the other little leaguers, possibly Satoko herself, and they refused to let him use it.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 12 ::
The BBQ happens.
She does not forget her promise, because Satoshi reminds her every other time she visits him. Shion and Satoko skip out before cleanup and make the visit they otherwise make on June 11, before heading to Okinomiya to do evening shopping. While out shopping, they meet the newly-evicted Teppei Hojo who was wondering why Satoko wasn't at home. Shion helplessly watches Teppei drag Satoko back to the Hojo residence.
The evening, Shion calls Satoshi through the line in the safehouse and tells him about Teppei taking Satoko away.
Satoshi leaves the saferoom early, without telling Shion.
In a paranoid fit, he rushes out that very evening to Okinomiya to buy all the equipment necessary for making a corpse disappear. However this also results in him being seen in public, possibly after getting into an altercation with the same bikie gang that he saved Shion from before, alerting the police that he'd shown up.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 12 ::
In Tsumihoroboshi, this is when Rika and Satoko's game club punishment of wearing Angel Mort outfits occurs but as Onidamashi is running on Onikakushi events, the picnic happens instead.
At some point after Rena returns home, her father is visited by Rina's pimp, who is not Teppei, and gets punched in the face.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 13 ::
He intends to tell Satoko about her brother being sighted, but Satoko is late and he gets stonewalled by Keiichi, triggering his rough-housing and Keiichi's subsequent visit to Irie.
Teppei's threats to mess up her brother's room are less effective than normal, as she knows exactly where her brother is and misses him much less than normal. The fake pills being given to him by Shion may or may not play some role, alongside with the apparent absence of Rina Mamiya and any stress of the police or yakuza coming after him.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 13 ::
Rena leaves early after seeing Satoko getting hit with the jack-in-the-box, as this reminds her of father getting punched the previous night. This is the day when her father in Tsumihoroboshi-hen usually sends her to Okinomiya to pick up a delivery and when she eavesdrops on Rina and is told about Rina being a scam artist by Shion and Kasai at Angel Mort.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 14-17 ::
By Tsumihoroboshi's timeline, Rena murders Rina Mamiya and hides the pieces of her corpse in the junkyard on June 14.
The murder has already happened by June 15 and Rena is hiding bits of the bod(ies) in the junkyard. Rena has likely hit Level 4 Syndrome at this point. On June 17, Keiichi, Rena and Mion run into Tomitake on the way back from school and Keiichi makes a joke about him being a spy.
Rena's paranoia makes her suspect Tomitake may in fact BE a spy (which technically he is, just not out for Rena) and she starts watching him closely.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 14 ::
Satoko is completely absent.
After Chie leaves, Satoshi arrives. He has brought his bat and all the equipment necessary to make a body disappear. He barges into the house, kills Teppei and transports the body outside to bury it with Satoko following after him in horror. When the body is dealt with, he pets Satoko on the head with a "mattaku" and ushers her back to the house to sleep, making her promise not to tell anybody about what happened.
Child Services arrives to knock on the door while Satoshi and Satoko are out burying the body and finds nobody home. The case worker retires for the night and calls their house phone the next morning, which Satoko picks up.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 15 ::
Her words "nii-nii tasukete" are mistaken by all present for meaning "Help (me), big brother"; they are instead intended to mean "Help (my) big brother". Her continuous apologies are for the guilt she feels at having turned her brother into a murderer.
In Tatarigoroshi, Satoko mentions that Child Services gatecrashed her house and caused a big disturbance for her and Teppei. Here, it is apparently only a phone call that caused the trouble. Why would a mere phone call cause trouble?
Because Teppei is no longer around to answer and she had to give Child Services all the excuses on his behalf while pretending he was still alive to cover up his murder.
She is wearing her school uniform; she came straight from Okinomiya after being told to "take care of Satoko" on the phone by Satoshi. Satoshi did not tell her about the murder and she thinks Teppei is still alive. She hears about the breakdown when she arrives at the school and assumes Teppei was the cause. She joins Keiichi when they visit Child Services in Okinomiya and goes back to St. Lucia from there.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 16 ::
Either hallucinating Teppei being alive or more likely simply pretending he is in order to cover for Satoshi's killing, she spends the whole day avoiding Child Services while making calls to the school and doing non-existent chores for Teppei to keep up the appearance of him still being alive.
However when the Child Services worker assigned to Satoko becomes fed up enough to intrude into the Hojo residence, they notice something wrong about the scene - his prescription medicine hasn't been taken in the last two days, even possibly not collected from the mailbox at all since his last visit - and calls the police.
Shion turns up to Hinamizawa branch school as Keiichi rallies his class and brings them to Okinomiya. She is wearing her St. Lucia uniform; she has again come straight from Okinomiya and has cut class to do so. She has not called Satoshi or told him about the breakdown in order to avoid causing him anxiety and has not had a chance to visit the saferoom. She will not do either until at least June 18 when the weekend comes. She hopes to find a solution to Teppei before she next speaks with her boyfriend.
Ooishi, hearing from Child Services, immediately suspects Teppei has disappeared and that someone in the village with a grudge is to blame. He visits the Sonozaki household (the prime suspects) to question them on the disappearance but their alibis are solid and he walks away empty handed.

:: TATARIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 17 ::
Satoko drives Teppei's motorbike up to the Furude shrine, kicks over the roadside altar and makes sure the motorbike is heard so that people think Teppei was the one responsible. Nobody actually sees the culprit, as the act itself has all been done under concealment from the woods behind the altar.
Satoko, in contrast to Teppei who fled Hinamizawa out of fear of Oyashiro's Curse, is largely unafraid of divine punishment from Oyashiro as the incident where she was locked in the Saiguden never occurred and moreover, she knows full well that her brother was not actually disappeared by Oyashiro and the curse never actually happened in 1982.
The meeting Keiichi attended in Minagoroshi-hen was on the 16th but Mion implies there are multiple such meetings and it seems Keiichi attended a later one in this loop. Ooishi attends at the same time possibly to gauge the reactions from the elders over the idea of helping Satoko, looking for potential suspects behind Teppei's disappearance.
Shion still hasn't had a chance to pop down to the saferoom and check on Satoshi that week.

:: ONIDAMASHI AND WATADAMASHI ARCS - JUNE 19 ::
Satoshi has grown up on the legends of Oyashiro and of the ritual sword hidden in the statue used for killing demons. He is well into Level 4 and in his paranoia, he has decided that he must exorcise Rika from the mortal plane on the day of Watanagashi.
Without informing anyone, he leaves the Sonozaki saferoom and breaks into Kimiyoshi's residence, stealing the key to the Furude Saiguden, knowing Kimiyoshi will be at the festival and not at home. Before Takano arrives, he breaks inside and raids the Oyashiro statue for the Onigari-no-Ryuuou and absconds, locking the gate behind him.
Satoshi then returns to Kimiyoshi's house, either to ambush him and interrogate him on Rika or the Yamainu or else just to replace the key.

:: WATADAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 19 ::
Satoshi ends up killing Kimiyoshi in the ensuing confrontation at his house.
Takano and Tomitake, upon inspecting the Oyashiro statue, realize that it was opened recently and that the intact lock on the gate means someone with a key recently entered the Saiguden and stole the sword. They visit Kimiyoshi to inquire and arrive in time to see Satoshi, who flees the residence (likely in a vehicle belonging to Kimiyoshi) causing them to give chase and co-opt the nearest vehicle they find in the course of their desperate pursuit.
Shion is in town for the festival and and follows Tomitake and Takano, hoping to catch a glimpse of the men in vans that Satoshi claimed attempted to abduct him.
She arrives near Kimiyoshi's residence too late to see the actual incident; however she hears about Takano and Tomitake fleeing in a stolen truck on police radio and sees the Yamainu vans circling the residence as their clean-up crew moves in to disappear Kimiyoshi's body. Putting two and two together, she assumes the mysterious men-in-vans were chasing Tomitake and Takano down.
The police are on doubly high alert due to the extra disappearance of Kimiyoshi this loop. Realizing the police suspect the Sonozakis were the ones doing the chasing (or even thinking it possible that the police might be working with the men-in-vans to frame them) she hurries back to the Sonozaki estate and immediately calls Keiichi to check he's still safe, fearful that with her actions she's now put Keiichi at risk of abduction or being accused of aiding the Sonozakis - and is told that the police have also just approached him about Tomitake and Takano. Wanting to speak with Satoshi about these developments, she heads down to the saferoom - only to promptly discovers that Satoshi is also gone.
Completely freaking out at these sudden twist of events, guilty with the realization that she's dragged Keiichi into life-threatening danger, she breaks down to her sister in panic and tells Mion everything about having hidden Satoshi in the saferoom and how the shady men after him just disappeared two people in front of her.
Mion, knowing about the Yamainu, vindicates Shion's belief about Rika's army of "minions" existing, but doesn't believe her friend Rika herself could possibly be involved. She instead thinks Kimiyoshi could be behind it and is mad at Shion for getting Keiichi involved.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 19 ::
In Onidamashi-hen, because Takano and Tomitake do not waste as much time in the Saiguden telling ghost stories to Keiichi, they discover Satoshi's burglary sooner and also intercept Kimiyoshi before or at his house, averting his murder. This still ends up with Satoshi fleeing the property and them giving chase in the same way as in Watadamashi-hen.
Going by Watanagashi-hen timeframes, this would have been after they broke into the Saiguden. Unlike in Watadamashi, Shion is not present for the festival. Instead, it is Rena who follows Tomitake because in her paranoia she fears he is a spy out to get her.
She follows and sees them fleeing in their stolen truck, but does not see the Yamainu as they were not called in to clean up Kimiyoshi's corpse. She wonders if they were running from Oyashiro.

:: ONIDAMASHI AND WATADAMASHI ARCS - JUNE 19 ::
In both arcs, the pursuit of Satoshi ends badly for Tomitake and Takano.
Whether he somehow gets the better of them or whether they manage to apprehend him but he wakes up prematurely in the back of the truck before they can get to the clinic, Satoshi ends up causing them all to crash the stolen truck into the back of the Irie Clinic, critically wounding Tomitake and Takano in the process and causing enough structural damage that the Yamainu are forced to immediately "remodel" the clinic.
The stolen van, along with Tomitake and Takano's bodies are vanished by the Yamainu to cover up the incident and are never found by police. Satoshi manages to escape from the clinic in the chaos of the crash by stealing Takano's gun and one of the Yamainu's builders' uniforms and impersonating a grunt, but breaks or somehow loses the Onigari-no-Ryuuou along the way, though he retains his bat.
Because of Tomitake and Takano's disappearances, the police have the Sonozaki estate under tight surveillance, rendering Satoshi unable to return to the safehouse even through the secret passageway. He instead is forced to run and hide in the school and raids the infirmary there to treat his wounds.
He locks himself in a cubicle in the men's room and hides there the whole time, well into the next day.

:: WATADAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 20 ::
The only Sonozaki sister Keiichi ever speaks to on this day is Mion.
Mion had spent long hours the previous night grilling Shion over her confession and straightening out all the known facts. She does not have any sort of fever and Shion herself is currently still hiding at the Sonozaki estate worried about getting abducted. Rika, in her Bernkastel-funk, assumes this staying up late was a consequence of ShMion working double time on her murders and speedrunning Kimiyoshi, Oryo and her sister all in one night.
Because of his disappearance, Rika is briefly separated from Satoko at some point before or on the way to school to be questioned by the police. Ooishi does not come to the school itself; the police are stretched thin conducting their manhunt for 3 missing people instead of 2.
Satoko, during her separation from Rika, has been intercepted near the restrooms by her brother. He tells her to keep his presence there secret, that he's found out things about the men-in-vans, to be careful of Rika and to come see him again after school.
Rika is not invited to play dodgeball. During this time, Rika instead talks to a Yamainu agent behind the school and this is witnessed separately by both Mion and Satoshi, who has line of sight from the toilet windows. Both of them take this as hard confirmation that Rika is responsible for everything. It's made even worse when Mion also hears about Rika talking scarily to Keiichi.
As soon as Rika is alone, Satoshi grabs his baseball bat, climbs out the toilet window, ambushes her with a blow to the back of the skull and then crushes her windpipe using the handle of the bat. He throws her body into the nearby septic tank.
When Mion mentions hearing about Rika talking to someone in a construction uniform in class Satoko assumes it was her brother, panics and attempts to shut down the discussion.
This particularly dumb response backfires, causing a manhunt to start for Rika.
When the manhunt begins, Satoshi climbs out the window and up onto the roof to hide (possibly with assistance from Satoko) while everybody is searching inside. And then heads back into the building through the second-floor window, sneaking back down to the toilets when everyone is outside.
Mion catches a glimpse of him sneaking back through the second-floor window near the septic tank and tells Keiichi to check the roof and then has her small breakdown over Rika apparently being an evil serial killer out for the heads of the Hojos. She thinks Rika's fatalistic rant was a declaration of her intent to kill Keiichi right to the poor boy's face and that now she's run off with Kimiyoshi to set her plan into motion.
Satoshi, not knowing that Shion has told Mion about him, stays in the toilet until he can meet up with Satoko again as she leaves the school. He tells her he's found out that Nurse Takano was involved with the Yamainu and tried to kidnap him - her gun with her fingerprints is the proof - and the whole Irie Clinic is suspect. He tells her that he has already killed the suspected ringleaders, gives her Takano's gun and tells her to go to the Sonozaki estate and contact Shion. They can protect her and maybe, with the gun as evidence, they can expose the Irie Clinic and end Oyashiro's Curse.
Satoko eventually goes to the estate and is let in. Mion returns home and receives the new information. Thinking the "masterminds" behind the Yamainu are all dead, Mion suggests trying to negotiate with them while Oryo and Shion rendezvous with Satoshi in order to secure him as a police witness against the Yamainu if necessary.
Sometime after Mion gets home, she decides to call Keiichi and escorts him to the house and locks him in the saferoom hoping to make him look like a victim in order to prevent him getting caught by the Yamainu or arrested by the police as a Sonozaki accomplice.
Shion and Oryo make preparations to flee Hinamizawa while Mion prepares to greet the Yamainu and convince them to back off.
The Yamainu, having either seen Shion following Takano and Tomitake and finally realizing that Satoshi was hiding at the Sonozaki estate the whole time - or else possibly because Rika told them ShMion had hit L5 - show up and raid the estate before the preparations are complete.
In the ensuing attack, the Yamainu intercept Oryo and Shion escaping through the secret passageway, torture them for Satoshi's location and then toss their corpses in the well. They bust open the door to the saferoom but find only Keiichi's unmoving body and leave him there.
They shoot both Mion and Satoko when they attempt to negotiate and plant Takano's gun to make it look like a mutual killing between Mion and Satoko, two individuals from families known to have a mutual grudge, pinning all the recent deaths and disappearances onto Mion.
Satoshi is intercepted at his rendezvous point by the Yamainu and disappeared forever.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 20 ::
Ooishi comes to the school the very next day to speak with Keiichi.
From inside his cubicle, Satoshi hears Chie calling Keiichi out and then overhears Ooishi's voice, panics and decides that it is too risky to stay on the premises without knowing what Ooishi was there for, given the possibility someone saw Satoshi sneaking into the school and could be here to investigate the premises. He immediately climbs out the window and flees out the back of the school.
During this time, the Yamainu find out that Rena was following Tomitake that night and raids her house rather than the Sonozaki estate to check whether she might have been involved with Satoshi. They silently intrude, search, find nothing and leave furniture slightly out of position when they exfiltrate, gaslighting Rena even further in her paranoia when she returns home. She wonders if Oyashiro paid a visit to her house.
The police are still watching the Sonozaki estate and the Yamainu are crawling everywhere. Satoshi ends up spending the night in the abandoned van in the junkyard.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 21-22 ::
Satoshi is forced to wait longer for an opportunity to kill Rika, unable to go anywhere with the Yamainu and police both out in force. There are cops patrolling around the estate, "construction workers" at the Furude Shrine watching over his sister, "gardeners" at the school and even a van near his old house. On June 21, when Mion mentions Takano and Tomitake disappearing, Rena muses about Oyashiro, privately hoping they were taken - and wonders if the reason Oyashiro visited her house was because Tomitake and Takano successfully escaped the curse and he needed new victims.
On June 22, Satoshi is finally driven out of the junkyard by sheer necessity. It has been 2 days since he last ate anything.
When Satoshi catches sight of Rena running past the junkyard to infiltrate Keiichi's house he leaves the van, breaks into Rena's own house and grabs whatever he can eat from her kitchen.
By the time Rena returns, Satoshi has gone back to the van. However she notices the missing food and in her rampant paranoia, concludes that not only is Oyashiro haunting her house; Oyashiro is hungry.
Takano and Tomitake still have not been found; Rena decides they must have run away, leaving Oyashiro unsatisfied. She becomes convinced that if she does not do something, her father will be consumed. She resolves to carry out Oyashiro's Curse herself by killing Keiichi - the police's spy - and then making herself disappear as an offering to satiate Oyashiro, all to protect her father.
This, she will do the next day.

:: ONIDAMASHI-HEN - JUNE 23 ::
On the night of the 23rd, the Yamainu presence has decreased and Satoshi can finally head out to murder Rika. While on the way there, he overhears the fight at Keiichi's house and enters to see Rena and Keiichi apparently both dead, has a moment of inspiration to pin Rika's impending murder on Rena and takes her knife.
He goes to Rika's house and attacks her. In the process, Satoshi either hallucinates his sister being something else and kills her too - or else leaves Satoko alive, but the event causes her to hit Level 5 and commits suicide. Satoshi either escapes, running back to the safehouse again, or else is caught by the Yamainu on the way and is never found.

Thoughts on GTA III nostalgia

I fell in love with GTA III in what were probably the ideal circumstances. I was maybe 13, I hadn't had access to a lot of violent video games before, and I knew my mom wouldn't approve. I don't remember how I got a copy but I had a dinky twisty knob TV set up in my room and I would play PS2 late when I thought everyone else was asleep. It blew my mind in a way that I think is probably impossible now... like the way people only really "get" the popularity of Star Wars if they watch it for the first time either as kids or in 1977. I spent hours scouring the map until I knew it better than my own neighborhood, driving the taxi, listening to all the Chatterbox calls with Lazlow, I was so deeply immersed.
I'm picking the game up again more than 15 years later because I never actually beat Catalina, and so much feels different in this familiar little world. The gameplay of course didn't age well, the terrible camera and targeting mechanics are much more noticeable... but also I'm breezing through it in a way I couldn't have at that age. There are still some pain-in-the-ass missions like El Burro making you pick up those damn magazines, but it took me so many tries to get 8-Ball through the Cartel drug ship as a kid and this time I did it in one.
The game hasn't changed, obviously, I have. The humor that felt transgressive to me at 13 now just has me going "ah yes, BDSM and lesbians, those are indeed both a thing." I remember how much I could amuse myself for hours going on a rampage with the cheat codes and trying to cause as much destruction as possible. Now that feels stressful, I catch myself trying to follow the flow of traffic as well as possible because the driving is soothing and I don't want to get into unnecessary trouble. I picked up a sex worker for extra health then killed her with a baseball bat to get my money back, just like old times... instead of "haha awesome" my brain went "huh while this is game is not individually responsible for the cultural problem, it definitely contributed to an attitude that I and many young people have been passively taught about valuing sex workers less as people and thinking it's funny or inconsequential when they are brutalized."
I've really been thinking a lot about the characters who feel like some of the most iconic in the series to me... the writing is ridiculously better in games like GTA 4 & 5 but I feel like those characters just don't stick with you the same way. I've played them both much more recently and loved them but if pressed I don't think I could tell you even the main villain of either game let alone most of the supporting cast. Outside of the protagonists I think I could name off the top of my head Roman, Packie, and Gay Tony. A lot of what GTA 3 has going for it is an incredible voice cast... Joe Pantoliano as Luigi Gotterelli, Michael Madsen as Tony Cipriani, Kyle MacLachlan as Donald Love, Michael Rapaport as Joey Leone, Robert Loggia as Ray Machowski, Frank Vincent of The Sopranos as Salvatore Leone. The characters themselves are mostly paper-thin caricatures, but they really feel like they have a deep memorable presence in a way some of the later more "realistic" games just don't. It's probably just nostalgia... the characters are mostly broad archetypes or ethnic stereotypes like mafia don, corrupt cop, italian wiseguy, honor-obsessed yakuza, pervy latino gangbanger, dragon lady, morally bankrupt real estate tycoon... like someone wrote out a list of stock crime drama characters. I think stories that rely on archetypes like that probably resonate with you most heavily when you're around 13 for the same reason it's the age you're most susceptible to superhero comics or catchy pop songs about love.
In returning to GTA 3 I feel like I desperately want to find something deeper in the story to justify the amount of space it occupies in my imagination. The closer I look at it the more I feel like that something isn't there. It's not a bad game, there's a lot that I'm still finding very enjoyable about it years later, and I can very much recognize that the flaws are largely a product of its time. GTA 4 is some of my favorite emotional storytelling in any video game and I think it's interesting how you can kind of see the roots of that here. They were laying down an enormous amount of ideas that feel very basic today but they were the groundwork for much more interesting things to come. The Rockstar games of this era all feel more operatic than introspective… Vice City and San Andreas, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver, Manhunt, The Warriors, Bully. Then you get to GTA 4 & 5, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, games that are still using that kind of storytelling but feel a little more cerebral... like they're at least meditating on an idea or a theme and not just walking you through a sequence of cool events. The coolest thing for me about replaying GTA 3 is seeing the early DNA of those later games knowing how much it has evolved since.

[IIL] Games that tie base-building into progression [WEWIL]?

This is not a good title, but its such a weird and specific thing I don't know how to describe it, except through examples.
Saint's Row 2 - You buy safehouses, but then you can upgrade the floors, wallpaper, furniture, stereo, etc.. What starts out as a bunch of run-down lousy apartments all end up looking like they belong on MTV cribs. Not much direct benefit to gameplay but it gave you a tangible sense of progression.
Little King's Story - Kinda like Pikmin, if you're unfamiliar. You use the money and items you bring back from conquests to buy more land, beautify the kingdom... literally watch your kingdom grow from a shack with some hobos in a field to a thriving metropolis (by middle ages standards). I love when they tie in gameplay but not necessarily required.
The Sims - So when I was a kid I loved to start with a family of 8 people and no money cheats. Which generally meant a lot of beds in one room and one toilet. But as people started making more money, I'd upgrade the house to be more comfortable and eventually extravagant. Yes, there were gameplay benefits, but after a while it was more about showing off than making sims' lives' easier.

Yakuza 0 real estate minigame -I LOVE Yakuza 0. And I enjoyed this minigame. But you dump all this money into these properties to improve them and there's no outward sign you've done anything. I would have loved for them to get spruced up a bit after pouring millions of yen into them.
Ni No Kuni 2 Base Builder - I love the look of the kingdom as it expands, but its time-consuming and in my experience the things you unlock are so expensive they're useless when you get them. Yes. I would rather have just dumped money into the Kingdom and seen it grow visually than had gameplay benefits attached (but poorly implemented)

More evidence of odd Korean affinity for supposedly Japanese Daisaku Ikeda

Hey, yallz. This started out as a snarktastic romp, but quickly turned into a deep dive. Full disclosure: Thar be lots o' information ahead, me hearties, but it identifies a few more of those dots that need to be connected in order to see the whole picture. It is all coming into focus - what's ahead is long, but I think you'll find it worthwhile. (Sorry not sorry.) Shall we begin?
From the NHR:
"Shin'ichi's (Daisaku's) father had spent time in Seoul before World War II, when he was drafted and stationed there. Whenever Korea came up in conversation, he would express his indignation at the terrible arrogance and cruelty of the Japanese in Korea. These discussions left Shin'ichi, then in elementary school, with a deep concern for Korea. Shin'ichi believed Korea was a great cultural benefactor to Japan, and that Japan could best repay its debt of gratitude by sharing Nichiren Daishonin's profound philosophy of happiness and peace with the people there. He also advocated exchanges between the people's [sic] of Korea and Japan to forge lasting ties of friendship for the sake of future generations. (The New Human Revolution, vol. 8, p. 268)
Of course, if Ikeda's REAL father were Korean, that would be convenient camouflage to explain why he'd been in Seoul. If that fact had not been known, the fact that Ikeda's father was connected to Seoul, I doubt it would have come up at all. Ikeda's Korean father may have been one of the Korean men who came or were forced to come and work in Japan:
During Japan's colonial rule [starting in 1910], some Koreans went to Japan looking for economic opportunities, while others were taken there as forced laborers. Source
Also also, considering Pappy Ikeda's age PLUS the fact that his seaweed farm provided supplies to the Grand Ise Shrine, the Shinto heart of Imperial Japan, it seems extremely unlikely that the Japanese government would conscript him, an old guy who had a passel of kids, including grown children they could be going after (and did). I have a farm; you can't just up and leave and expect to still produce a harvest. It's not a believable narrative.
It's in narratives like this that you can see the bones of the REAL Ikeda history jutting out. Either he wanted to see a narrative that contained familiar elements to him, with the proper excuses why these should be positive things (or at least not a problem), or his ghostwriters knew about his history and snuck bits and pieces in there for the sharp-eyed reader to pick up.
A magazine published by SGI in March 2000 cites an interview [with] Ikeda. "I have a memory of my father teaching me Korean," he says in the interview. Source
Again, that scenario makes sense if Ikeda's father was Korean.
IF I'm right about Ikeda being a zainichi (person of Korean ethnicity born/living in Japan), he was 24 when the Treaty of San Francisco took effect in 1952, removing his citizenship and rights overnight. Toda immediately arranged a marriage for him with Wifey - they were married less than a month after the Treaty of San Francisco went into effect (more on that in a bit). Ikeda's always been a bitter, vindictive person; this sequence of events could have played a large part in shaping his hatred of Japan (see below) and determination to take over the country and rule it as he saw fit.
Back to the NHR:
"If the relationship between the two countries must be likened to that of siblings, in light of Korean's historical role as a great cultural benefactor of Japan, Korea clearly should be referred to as the elder. Despite this fact, Japan went ahead and attacked the country that it owed a huge debt of gratitude. (NHR-8, 271)
And doesn't Ikeda think everybody owes HIM "a huge debt of gratitude"??
"Chang recollects: 'I was picked on just because I was Korean. Even in school races, we had to let the Japanese girls beat us. We had to make them look good. Everyone knew that; it was common knowledge. We weren't allowed to stand out or succeed. When we were playing with Japanese children, they would suddenly start chanting, 'Korea, Korea,' and throw stones at us and say that we stunk." (NHR-8, 281)
But this sort of thing didn't begin in earnest until after Japan's loss in the Pacific War resulted in a reckoning where the Japanese became even more insular and xenophobic.
As total war erupted in China in 1937 and war with the U.S. began in 1941, Japanese racial discourse swung hard toward an articulation of Japanese racial superiority based on the idea of Japanese purity. During WWII, Japanese racial politics aligned with German racial ideologies and fueled the ideological battles among different races and nation-states. ... In the postwar years, in the midst of a collective affirmation of racial unity based on common sentiments rooted in nature, history, and imaginedancestry, the "discourse on Japaneseness" (nihonjinron) was born and constructed the core belief of national identity with assertions about unique Japanese blood and thought processes. While "there is no such entity of the 'Japanese race' in the objective sense, the Japanese have tended to perceive themselves as a distinct 'racial group." ... Japanese "purity" also became the foundation of a new "anti-imperial" ideology for postwar Japan in which Japanese as a unique ethnic group in the world were inherently inward-oriented and therefore non-expansionist. The prewar empire was dismissed as an aberration and the "racial supremacy" of the Japanese that undergirded Japanese militarism was tamed as a "racial uniqueness" that guaranteed Japanese peacefulness. Japan's national identity, especially in the postwar years, was built upon the myth of a unified and uniquely shared imagined community based on the purity of race. ...the discriminatory treatment of Korean residents in Japan ... is a sobering reminder that there is still no guarantee that the government will refrain from the adoption of racialized policies.
We've noted how the Japanese and the Japanese members of SGI clearly consider themselves superior to the other races and ethnicities.
At the end of WWII, Japanese propaganda perpetuated this strict hierarchical view of Asia in racial terms. With Japan at its apex, the propaganda asserted that Japan's three thousand year history and unparalleled racial supremacy bestowed a civilizing mission on the country. The racial hierarchy was clearly spelled out in the 1943 Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare population policy program report, called "An Investigation of Global Policy with the Yamato Race as Nucleus." The Meiji Constitution established that the Emperor was a direct descendant of the original Yamato clan. ...
The original policies of the allied occupation were to democratize Japan by deconstructing the Zaibatsu, long controlled by corporate oligarchs, and prosecuting high-ranking fascist war criminals. Washington soon changed their policies in the late 1940s and decided to release Class-A war criminals, support fascist collaborators, and reconstitute prewar conservative business rules. ..."Recognizing that the former industrial and commercial leaders of Japan are the ablest leaders in the country, that they are the most stable element, that they have the strongest natural ties with the U.S., it should be U.S. policy to remove obstacles to their finding their natural level in Japanese leadership." The new U.S. policy in Japan terminated the purge of Japanese war criminals and reinstalled the fundamental structure of Japan's pre-war fascist regime that was responsible for the creation and manifestation of prewar Japanese propaganda that emphasized the purity of Japanese blood and the uniqueness of the Yamato race and culture.
As the only country in Asia that escaped Western colonial occupation, Japan developed its economy and industry with strong protectionist policies, and justified the economic and political exploitation of Asian countries through its racialized propaganda. Japan's political acquiescence led to the expansion of American and Western colonial projections that the prewar Japanese government, at least rhetorically, tried to prevent by its own imperial policies in Asia. Longstanding cultural attitudes and ignorance set the stage for continuing American disinterest in Korean attempts to achieve moral redress for Korea’s colonial past. Korean exclusion was sealed by departmental concerns about upsetting a careful timeline that prioritized the restoration of Japanese sovereignty.
Despite the spark of multilateralist fervor in the ending days of World War II, American diplomats ultimately failed to normalize relations between Japan and Korea. Source
Back to the NHR:
"The Japanese government's treatment of Korean residents in Japan was extremely cold and cruel. Even harsher, however, was the unchanging and deep-rooted prejudice and discrimination by the Japanese people. Regardless of the official policy in place, many Japanese companies refused to employ Koreans, and many people would not rent them rooms." (NHR-8, 283)
Was Ikeda expressing his resentment over having been treated as a second-class citizen after the Treaty of San Francisco went into effect in 1952? Wouldn't this explain why Ikeda was so determined to insulate himself via wealth, power (political and cult), and layers upon layers of loyal followers, all constantly told to "Protect me"? That's clearly a strange enough detail that it keeps coming up...

Scarlett vows to lie, steal, cheat, and kill - whatever it takes. And she does! She's horrible! She's ruthless, bulldozes over anyone who gets in her way, and takes whatever she sees as the most expedient means to her goal - even stealing her sister's fiancé for herself. Scarlett O'Hara is a truly AWFUL person.
But we don't hate her - no, we understand why she is that way. The privation of the Civil War and the difficulties she faced in trying to make her way in the chaotic aftermath shaped her in important ways. Scarlett O'Hara came from money, and she was determined to regain - by hook or by crook - that lifestyle that she felt had been so cruelly taken from her.
Can you see the similarity to Ikeda yet?

When we look at what Ikeda chases after, we can see what HIS motivations are.

He's an uneducated buffoon - dropped out of freakin' community college after only a semester - so he uses the wealth he's connived to amass to buy honorary degrees and to purchase photo ops of fancy university people honoring him (you'd be surprised what university officials will do in exchange for a tidy donation). He's set up almost a dozen vanity presses where the dirty yakuza money he's laundering and all those good-hearted, sincere, deluded SGI members' donations pay to publish books written by others, with Ikeda's name stamped on the cover - books no one will ever read. But at least he can now claim to be a published author! (Too bad, Daisaku, another cult leader holds the world record for most self-published titles - L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology!)
What else does Ikeda chase after? Respect and admiration. He is constantly begging world leaders to meet with him, even for just a photo op, in hopes that their fame and prestige will rub off on him. Many of these meetings are purchased. The most innocuous and casual of exchanges suddenly becomes, according to Ikeda's ghost-writers, a dialogue of world-class importance between towering visionaries! So many of these are published in Japanese, after the deaths of the "visionaries" in question, that it's likely their estates have no idea Ikeda's blowing it all up into such a charade. Ikeda has tried to set himself up, an absolute unknown, as the equivalent of the world-famous Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi, an obscene overweening vanity that most people find disgusting and repellent, leading observers to conclude that Ikeda is vain and cheap and the more self-aware members to be extremely embarrassed. The pieces are all falling into place.
What's funny is how he [Ikeda] talks about "the Japanese", not "we Japanese" or "my people" - Ikeda is speaking about the Japanese people as "other" to himself. Does this come naturally to Ikeda because of his Korean ethnicity? To a zainichi, someone of Korean heritage, being by law a non-citizen and stripped of rights within Japanese culture could predictably create some feelings of hostility toward "the Japanese"... Ikeda's repeated references on the Japanese people's ungratefulness likely refers to his own experience at being stripped of Japanese citizenship as a young man just because he was of Korean ancestry, despite all he felt he had contributed to the country - having worked as a teen in a munitions factory† - despite it being HIS country (he was born there). Note that under Japanese law, zainichi can't vote or run for political office, which explains the urgency with which Ikeda formed a political party (something Toda said the Soka Gakkai would never do) as his (Ikeda's) only way to gain political power for himself. That also explains why Ikeda has never run for office - he's prohibited BY LAW, and if he TRIED, well, THAT would be all over the news. Notice how one of Ikeda's pet political party Komeito's planks is to give the vote to the zainichi. Self-interest much, Sensei??
Remember - Toda said that the Soka Gakkai would never field a political party:
Toda emphasized that the Soka Gakkai had no interest in forming a political party or even electing members to the lower house. His intent was to build a foundation for the construction of the kokuritsu kaidan, national high sanctuary, at Fujinomiya by imperial decree. This, he thought. would legitimize Nichiren Shoshu and accomplish obutsu myogo, the fusion of politics and religion.
Despite Toda's announcement that Soka Gakkai would not form a political party, in 1964 third president Daisaku Ikeda announced the formation of a political arm of the Soka Gakkai which became known as the Komeito, Clean Government Party, which included obutsu myogo and Buddhist Democracy in its platform.
The public furor over Soka Gakkai's apparent attempt to position Nichiren Shoshu as the state religion and the aggressive proselytizing carried out by Soka Gakkai resulted in the separation of Komeito and Soka Gakkai. Komeito dropped obutsu myogo and Buddhist Democracy from the platform. The term "obutso myogo" has been dropped from SGI jargon and purged from books and documents. Source
Ikeda: China is such a big and populous country. Yet family ties are deeper and stronger than we in Japan can even imagine.
Is Ikeda alluding to his "outsider" status in his own family as an adopted zainichi orphan? The fact that he's clearly estranged from his many (adopted) brothers and sisters? The fact that his father(s) basically threw him away?
So the very first time Daisaku Ikeda's father meets this Toda guy, Toda asks his permission to take possession of Daisaku (who by this time must be around 24?) to the point of informing Pappy Ikeda that he's planning an ARRANGED MARRIAGE for his son, and Pappy Ikeda doesn't give a shit! "Yeah, go on, take him and get him outta here" is his attitude - is this because Daisaku was already a black sheep for abandoning the family earlier? No one from his family of origin joined the Soka Gakkai, you know, not even after Daisaku started making bank. Daisaku's father doesn't seem to care about him at all and just wants to be rid of him. Notice what glowing, fawning terms Ikeda uses in talking about "mothers" but he doesn't have much at all to say about "fathers"? Notice what a failure Ikeda was himself as a father? That has to come from somewhere...
Ikeda has written those 2 adopted children out of his own bio; isn't that peculiar? A family wealthy enough to have 8 children of their own AND adopt an additional 2 children, who saw their fortunes collapse with the end of the war effort (obviously not the earlier 1923 Kanto earthquake), would have probably been pretty happy to be able to get rid of at least those two adopted children now that they were poor.
Ikeda (and/or his ghostwriters) obviously thought it would make Ikeda look GOOD to be saying these things! Ikeda comes across as fawning, creepy, and self-important, and his deep-seated hostility toward Japan and "the Japanese" comes through loud and clear. In light of this thinly-veiled attitude of contempt and animosity toward the people of Japan, doesn't Ikeda's obsession with control, wealth, and power make sense?
Could Ikeda have been laying it on thick with a trowel in hopes of currying favor with the Chinese government in case he needed to call on them for backing (a strategic alliance) if he ran into any trouble taking control of the Japanese government when the time came? Source
Ikeda did promise the Chinese government that the SGI would not do any shakubuku in China, you know!
Chris Holte heard the story from a SGI member whom had visited China, that the SGI had promised not to engage in mass Shakubuku Campaigns as part of their negotiations to visit China. Source
Since recruiting and fund-raising are any cult's primary activities, the Ikeda cult included, Ikeda must have had some compelling reason to set one of his top two, most profitable, objectives aside.
† - ...at the age of 14, Ikeda began working in the Niigata Steelworks munitions factory as part of Japan's wartime youth labor corps. Source
Think about how all this background information might have applied to the later context that the Soka Gakkai recruited from among society's most marginalized people - the poor, the sick, the displaced, the un-and-undereducated, laborers rather than skilled workers, lonely people, sex workers, those from dysfunctional families...
They were struggling! They were suffering! The spoils of Japan's economic system were inaccessible to them; they were feeling left behind, shut out, ignored. Who cared about them and THEIR needs? And along comes Pied Piper Ikeda, singing songs about how bad the Japanese government is, how filthy, how corrupt, so "dirty" that it was necessary to form a "clean" government party (literal meaning of "Komeito") in order to try and fix things. Ikeda intended to fix things - according to his own self-serving vision, which was of his cult spreading like wildfire through Japanese society and his pet political party gaining a clear and dominating majority within the government, a strong enough majority to vote in whatever Ikeda wanted. Change the constitution to make Nichiren Shoshu (then the Ikeda cult's parent temple) the national religion? Done! Remove the now-obsolete Emperor (he needed Shinto to establish his legitimacy, remember) and replace him with the beloved Soka Gakkai strongman Ikeda? DONE!
Notice how all this hatin' on Japan and Japanese society would appeal to the frustrated malcontents (whose frustrations his cult was exploiting and perpetuating). They'd do whatever Ikeda said in hopes of gaining power, influence, status, and social standing for themselves - and this desire was thoroughly exploited by the Soka Gakkai and the Society for Glorifying Ikeda: They, Ikeda's disciples, were the most noble, most worthy, most valuable of all people within society, and in the Ikeda New World Order, they would be the leaders, the decision-makers (or at least decision-enforcers), the elite.
Now think about the kinds of persons to whom such a vision would appeal. THAT's who the Soka Gakkai was recruiting. And of course they must be primed to not just accept, but to yearn for, a complete overthrow of the government they will be taught to hate if they don't hate it already.
Look at what Ikeda was telling them: Democracy is bad and wrong. Society needs more people who base their lives in Nichiren Daishonin's "Buddhism" so that they can unerringly make good decisions, for everyone's happiness. Society needs more of these people in positions of power and influence, to direct society toward happiness, prosperity, and peace. Always with the "peace". Who doesn't love "peace"? Just trust Sensei.
"My dear young friends, efforts being made now by politicians, economists, educators, and cultural experts to save Japan are doomed to failure, because the fields in which they work are incapable of doing what must be done, unless they are based on true Buddhism. Only true Buddhism can save our society and allow people to live in happiness." - Toda
Notice that one of Ikeda's pet political party's goals has been to gain the right to VOTE for Japan's Korean minority, the zainichi. If they'd ever managed to attain this goal, what group would Komeito be able to count upon in the future as a reliable source of votes? Yeah...
And why was the Soka Gakkai so insistent on Koreans' right to vote? Unless their supreme executive had some sort of personal interest in this particular detail...

The Corsican Mafia partnered with the Lucchese crime family through their "French Connection" heroin operation. The mafia use horse race tracks as headquarters for money laundering.
Carlo Gambino "Lucchese" is the grandson of the founder of the Gambinos through his father and grandson of the founder of the Luccheses through his mother. The Luccheses have an alliance with the Russian Mafia. The Russian Mafia have operations in Florida and California and the Gambinos live in New York, Florida, and California.
Thomas Gambino "Lucchese" Jr. owns an international warehouse and distribution company called Dynamic Worldwide with operations in China and other parts of Asia as well as in Texas next to the Mexican border. Thomas Jr. is headquartered out of Florida.
Frank Cali is the top boss in California and Los Angeles and has high authority within the Gambino crime family. Frank Cali covertly works with the Israeli-American businessmen Lyor Cohen who works with criminal rappers like Jay Z, Kanye West, DMX, and Method Man. Lyor Cohen is married to the deputy chairman of Christie's Asia Xin Li. The Massimo family of Rome own the Gambinos and Prince Tancredi Massimo works at Christies.
Rosario Gambino is Frank Calis uncle and adviser with close connections to Rome. The Gambinos are owned by the Massimo family with Prince Fabrizio Massimo-Brancaccio who is like the godfather of organized crime. The Massimos received tributes from most mafias and cartels around the world.

0 and Kiwami thoughts and which to play next?

Hi guys, Japanese gf (now wife) got me into playing yakuza games and I started off with 0.
Zero
(1) Many of the buildings of the Osaka map are almost exactly as per real life, having been there a few times. (2) Between the 2, I much preferred Majima. At heart both characters are likeable but Majima personality seems to have more depth and is just a more fun character vs Kiryu who is more a straight-up and deadly serious type of character. This is actually quite representive of the more funnier and easy going people of Osaka compared with people in Tokyo (my observation). (3) Majima seemed like a much easier character to play with in terms of fighting vs Kiryu. His breaker style was awesome vs big groups and the batter style was almost like a cheat code sometimes. It felt like most of the huge group fights were against Kiryu and I was always wishing he had Majima's breaker style. (4) The real estate and cabaret club side games are awesome (5) It's much easier to make money in Zero vs Kiwami which makes sense given the financial prosperity in pre-crash Japan in the 80s compared with Kiwami based in 2005.
Kiwami
(1) Most of the substories which pay homage or reference Zero feel a bit forced. For example Tachibana, Tachibana's glove item. But I guess that's not a bad thing as such since I felt Zero was an awesome game. (2) I rarely used Dragon of Dojima style. (3) I missed playing as Majima but I understand it had to be that way given the series story revolves around Kiryu. (4) I liked the repair kit. (5) Really liked finding the locker keys, didn't care at all for the "sexy insect" game/collector cards (6) Less huge gang fights vs Zero. It actually started off with a Kiryu vs tons of Tojo clan fight @ Sera's funeral and I thought it was gonna be like that all game but no. At least that's how I remember it. Was a shame.
From here, which is the next logical game to play? Is it best to wait for Kiwami 2?

Daisaku Ikeda ==> Scarlett O'Hara???

I say YES! Here's why:
On a different topic, I posted this summary of what we know of Ikeda's formative years:
Ikeda was raised in a dirt-poor family in the middle of the Pacific War. He had at least one brother killed in action. He came of age in a bombed out ruin of a country that was occupied by a foreign power. Ikeda had NOTHING. So Ikeda decided to make something of himself and found a way to be spectacularly successful at it. Ikeda now sits on billions in assets, has MILLIONS of adoring followers worldwide, and hasn't filed bankruptcy ONCE.
The image that came to mind was, of all things, that scene from "Gone With The Wind", where Scarlett has battled to get desperately ill Melanie and her newborn baby back to Tara, only to find it's in ruins:
"As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"
Scarlett vows to lie, steal, cheat, and kill - whatever it takes. And she does! She's horrible! She's ruthless, bulldozes over anyone who gets in her way, and takes whatever she sees as the most expedient means to her goal - even stealing her sister's fiancé for herself. Scarlett O'Hara is a truly AWFUL person.
But we don't hate her - no, we understand why she is that way. The privation of the Civil War and the difficulties she faced in trying to make her way in the chaotic aftermath shaped her in important ways. Scarlett O'Hara came from money, and she was determined to regain - by hook or by crook - that lifestyle that she felt had been so cruelly taken from her.
Can you see the similarity to Ikeda yet? When we look at what Ikeda chases after, we can see what HIS motivations are. He's an uneducated buffoon - dropped out of freakin' community college after only a semester - so he uses the wealth he's connived to collect to buy honorary degrees and to purchase photo ops of fancy university people honoring him (you'd be surprised what university officials will do in exchange for a tidy donation). He's set up almost a dozen vanity presses where the dirty yakuza money he's laundering and all those good-hearted, sincere, deluded SGI members' donations pay to publish books written by others, with Ikeda's name stamped on the cover - books no one will ever read. But at least he can now claim to be a published author! (Too bad, Daisaku, another cult leader holds the world record for most self-published titles - L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology!)
What else does Ikeda chase after? Respect and admiration. He is constantly begging world leaders to meet with him, even for just a photo op, in hopes that their fame and prestige will rub off on him. The most innocuous and casual of exchanges suddenly becomes, according to Ikeda's ghost-writers, a dialogue of world-class importance between towering visionaries! So many of these are published in Japanese, after the deaths of the "visionaries" in question, that it's likely their estates have no idea Ikeda's blowing it all up into such a charade. Ikeda has tried to set himself up, an absolute unknown, as the equivalent of the world-famous Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi, an obscene overweening vanity that most people find disgusting and repellent, leading observers to conclude that Ikeda is vain and cheap and members to be extremely embarrassed.

Ikeda - born poor, desperate to make something of himself, chooses a path that, while lucrative, leaves him feeling empty and ashamed. So he decides to use this hard-won wealth to BUY what he was never able to EARN, hoping that he can us this as a means of gaining acceptance into the elite company he so yearns to be a part of. But it doesn't work. Nobody cares. They take the money and give Ikeda the bum's rush right out the back door. He's not GOOD enough for anyone to include.
All that running around naming absolutely anything and everything after himself? That's repulsive. Genuinely important, wealthy people don't do that - only the nouveau-riche wannabes. You don't see Bill Gates selling "Gatesware", do you? You don't see Warren Buffett renaming Berkshire Hathaway "Buffett Empire", do you? Surely Ikeda is the only self-appointed World Poet Laureate. See, when you purchase the organization, you can then give its rewards to whoever you like.
And Ikeda likes nobody more than himself. He's ALWAYS his own beneficiary.
