Love and War

Love and War
In those years in her memory, Saigon is luxury and freedom, mixed with a bit of modernity, the time where she was born is intersecting with the renovation from the French. Her family is the most well-off in that city; her father is a government general, she attends French school and has a prosperous life that many people dream of. She was 15 years old, also loved but fun with friends also dreamed of romantic relationships. But until now, there was a person she's always tormenting in her heart, someone who made her live her whole life in regret.
He was born from a wandering life and gradually became one of the biggest names in the ancient Gypsy world. No one knows how he was born, what his real name is, but she loves him because of his dignity and generosity with his friends. He is a taciturn, taciturn person with an icy face. Not only her, everyone at that time also said that seeing him once was to be afraid. He has an unhappy family, his father goes to jail, his mother is addicted to gambling, and he gets depressed to drop out of school, sell newspapers, and polish shoes under bridges. He always helps others, robs from the rich, gives it to the poor, and refuses to give in to anyone. Ever since he was no longer the boy selling newspapers, the money he earned from protecting the dance halls was divided among his juniors, with no money left. Everyone said that he is the person they most respect, his manliness no one in this world can possess anymore.
She clearly remembered the first time she met him, at that time in front of the cinema he was in a fight, one of them had a gun, she wanted to leave, but she was too afraid that her legs could not move. When he saw that, he pulled her hard, causing her to fall to the ground. He did not care at all, just was ready to fight again, maybe he didn't want the unrelated person to be affected, and in her heart, there was a profound admiration from when but she understood the situation would never let her come to him.
Since then, she has watched him a lot, everyone knows, every 15-year-old girl's dream never comes true, the man she always wished for after a while has become famous in the Gypsy world, his personality is still the same, even generous with his brothers. But his name emerged so quickly that police officers began to pay attention, including her father; she heard they were going to put him in jail and send him to serve the battlefield. With the "crimes" that he had on the Gypsy at that time, it was not too difficult for her father to fulfill his purpose. But unexpectedly, this was an opportunity for this girl, through once using the excuse to go to her father working to see him, he used her to perform escaping camp. She knew he had that plan, and she could stop it, but she turned to follow his plan. He pretended to ask her questions and clasped her arm, asking the French officers to let them out; in fact, this was not a strict prison like a re-education center; they were too tired. The gangs went in and out like meals. Reaching outside, both hands still clasped after the run, she stood still, dumbfounded, and he quickly let go. He walked out instantly, leaving only two words: "Thank you."
After that meeting, her father got so angry that she forbade her from going out, but the little girl didn't care because that afternoon, it was not like she stayed at home all her life. A few times, he was arrested again but then kept escaping; her father and colleagues were also helpless against this stubborn slump. A short time later, with outstanding fighting skills caught the senior's eye at that time, he joined a gang, ran casinos, and developing more factories, almost district facilities. District 1 and District 2 are under his management. He gradually became more acquainted with the elite to expand his business; thousands of girls were waiting every night. He was so rich that only he and the deputy prime minister had the first two Mercedes in Saigon. People called him "the king without a throne in Mafia world." At that time, he began to plunge into the quagmire he created himself, the all night long, illegal business deals, bloody fights that made the girl who secretly watched him hurt.
One day, she received an invitation to eat with him, which cost her an entire night unable to sleep. She thought, pondered, feeling a feeling of happiness and worry in her heart. In fact, she knew that because my father was also a general who was managing the army, he wanted to pass her on to handle some work. There was a time when her father invited him to meet; he asked if he wanted to join the army, eliminate all the thugs, and her dad would protect him from the law. But he just smiled and answered:
- I was born from the bottom of society, now telling me that I fell over where I grew up; I was killed by shame.
She always wanted him to come work for her father, and she would have a happy ending with him, so she chose to go to her family's restaurant, both to impress him and to prepare to show her love. That night she appeared brilliantly, making him a little surprised even though he met many beauties in his life. He asked first:
- Thank you for accepting me today. Why are you not surprised when you received this invitation?
She smiled:
- We've met before, don't you remember?
- I always miss those who have helped me and still want to repay them. But I know you accepted my invitation not just because of a meeting like that while your family is in such a prominent position, I want to see the reason.
As she thought, this is the time when she needs to express her feelings to him about all the years that she has kept secret in her heart. She was about to say all she thought when suddenly the old regime's vice president passed and reminded him to know his limits. She feels terrible because her family is very close to him; they were already headaches with him a long time ago. But unexpectedly, he stood up and punched the vice president in the stomach. This is also a death sentence for him. He is never afraid of power; no one can prevent him, so he still acts like that day even a thousand times.
Immediately after that, the deputy prime minister immediately let her father accept forming a squad to destroy his gang in the night. This time she couldn't let go of her chance again wanted to run to tell him to run away together. She had just arrived in front of the door, the squad ambushed, he was hit by a fatal bullet but did not expect that a junior at that time took her hostage, and then when her father absentmindedly ran towards her as he shot dead on the spot. She could not cry, surrounded by gunshots and screams, she stood between the two men she loved most, everything faded, she just unconsciously trudged toward three. The fault was because she was all. After all, she had made things like that in the first place. She still blamed herself to this day.
Her father's death is the last knot in his life; the whole gang is imprisoned on Phu Quoc island; he is not committed, so he wants to escape prison. Before the plan could happen, he wrote three letters, two for two close brothers, the last one he had for her. In the letter he wrote:
"I'm sorry for what happened to you; this time, I don't think I can't be still alive, I understood what you wanted to say through your eyes, but my life couldn't do anything more for you. I even recognize you. If I have any chance to live more, I will find you. I hope you forget the past and live a good life."
That night, he and three juniors escaped to the mountain behind the prison, and the people on the mainland sent a boat to pick him up. Still, unexpectedly everything was in the vice president's calculations; he sends commando planes to chase him right in the woods. The escape failed; he was ambushed and shot down. She heard the news, neither happy nor sad, quietly put the letter in the closet and prepared to study in France. She seemed to be deceiving herself about the past to suppress the grief over what had happened.
She married a teacher and has three children, they sometimes want to visit Vietnam, but she is always resolutely opposed. No one understood what the reason was, until a long time later she returned to Vietnam, visited her father's grave, and accidentally passed by the house when she was 17, every day she "accidentally" passed by.

Collapse vs the 1%ers - the latter can wait as long as they feel like

Asians love the gambling game Baccarat.

The 'player''s side's cards are revealed first. If the player's cards are higher than the banker's cards, the banker's side gets one more card. (It is a bit more complicated, but that's the gist of the game) So the banker has a higher probability to win. The Casinos compensate that by charging a 5% fee on winnings from the banker's side or adding some weird restrictions.

In short, the edge on the Banker's side comes from the fact that the banker gets to play last. Same reason home teams in baseball are usually favored.

-----
I wrote several pieces about the experience of Russian nobles during the Revolution and USSR. Although a large % of them were killed, a sufficient number of them survived to continue their tradition as much as they could. Since they tended to only marry among themselves and kept a large number of old photographs and records which the commies didn't really bother with, they are able to reconstruct a large portion of their family tree and are waiting for a regime which would be more accommodating to their requests and let them use their titles again. complete with reclaiming their old properties.

Such processes already took places in Eastern Europe, in which many old landowners pre-1945 reclaimed a large portion of their old properties and kicked out the tenants. It was a haphazard process (i.e. if the land was owned by some crony of the regime it was not returned, but was given pennies on dollar as 'restitution') but many old rich families were back to their old status.

The 1%ers tend to have a good connection to their properties and the local authorities. I have talked a few times about a rich person who owns property in the boondocks having party with the local mayor and police chief, so the locals would be fighting the angry mob trying to hunt down the 1%er and the mayor and police chief being allowed into the Elites. Charles Batz, better known as d'Artagnan (he was, surprisingly, a real figure and his line still exists.) became a nobleman that way; his dad, equivalent to a policeman, saved King Louis XIII from an assassin and died instead.

It is a race between how long the 1%'s resources can last and how long the chaos lasts. usually, the 1% becomes the center of the locale, and the townspeople will support them for quite a long time . The history of China is full of the old regime, biding its time against some peasant rebellion or some nomad invasion, and striking back once the rebellion or nomads had spent themselves.

Today's 1%s have homes all over the world. usually NYC, London, Hong Kong (or other parts of Asia) and Aus/NZ, and sometimes in other unusual parts of the globe, so they will at least have a place to go if one part of the globe gets shitty. They can bid their time there and can return to their power.

A guy in the 1780s tried that idea. Ngyuen Anh, ruler of what is now Saigon, was being pushed around by Nguyen Hue (40% of Vietnamese are Nguyens so they are not related) , who ruled what is now Hue (better known as the battlefield during the Tet offensive). Anh, whose entire clan was destroyed by Hue, fled all the way to France, begged help to King Louis XVI, and got it. Something called the French Revolution got into Anh's plans and delayed the return of the old order by 15 years, but Anh returned to Vietnam in 1801(Hue had died in the meantime) with a bunch of French soldiers who didn't like Napoleon, and killed every one of Hue's followers (about 500,000 people) and reestablished the old order there in 1804, although that meant Vietnam was now a French possession, a condition which lasted till 1954.

That's the power of the 1%ers. They can buy time, and they can wait for generations. And they will have plenty of followers who want to back the winners.

Recap of India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore over three weeks

Landed in New Delhi. Went to my first ever Indian wedding (which was incredible - do it) and ate a lot of food. I’ve been to Delhi in the past so I skipped a lot of the usual (Taj, Agra, etc) and just browsed around. The best north indian food (curries) I had was at Gulati on Pandara Road ($9 gets you a superb buffet). The best south indian food (dosa, idly, etc) I had was at Saravanan Bhavan in Connaught Place (get the Rava Dosa which will come with three different chutneys - the coconut one is to die for). It’s important to pace yourself when it comes to indian food or else the masala will oversaturate you. I made sure to go to Khan market for some french toast just to give my palette a break. Once I got a breather, I headed over to Old Delhi which is where you’ll get superb mughlai cuisine (kebabs, tandoor based food, etc). I went to Karim’s and had their chicken tikka, paneer, and roti. Mango stuffed kulfi from Kuremal Kulfiwale. I used Uber to get around which was about $1-2 per ride. I went to India gate which was a mistake - crowded and non-stop hawkers hassling you all the way through. The traffic in Delhi is real and the smog even moreso. In retrospect, I wish I had brought a mask. If you just want to explore Delhi, 3-4 days is the minimum you’ll need. My lodging was booked through the wedding so I can’t speak on lodging/hostel recommendations.
Then I flew to Siem Reap via Bangkok. It’ll cost you ~$35 for a VOA + passport photo. The taxis are fixed fare and $10 via car will get you to downtown SR. I stayed at a hostel called lubd for ~$8 a night. It’s hard to put this into words but this is probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at in my life. It has a premium, luxury finish to it but the crowd are the coolest, down the earth travelers I’ve met. I went to Angkor Wat and did the sunrise tour + 3 temples tour. I’m not sure how worth it waking up at 4AM was for that - it didn’t feel magical. There was also a huge crowd so that may have dampened the mood. The other temples are cool too. This was one of the those checkbox destinations; I’d regret it if I didn’t go but at the same time, there wasn’t that much there for me. I left after two nights which was a mistake. Though there isn’t a whole lot do outside of seeing AW, the crowd and vibe at the hostel was amazing and I wish I had more time to meet some people there. As far as food goes, I couldn’t detect a drastic difference between Cambodian and Thai food. I did have the signature Amok Curry which was OK, nothing amazing.
From SR, I took an overnight bus using Giant Ibis to Phnom Penh. The bus ride was surprisingly comfortable and took about 7 hours. In PP, I went to the S21 prison and the Killing Fields. Both are sobering sites and worth going to if you are into history. For the Killing Fields, you are given an audio headset. I thought the recordings and narratives were very well done. I stayed at 88 backpackers hostel which wasn’t great. It seemed pretty empty and the vibe was the complete opposite of where I had come from in lubd. I couldn’t get a read on PP but I also didn’t dedicate enough time for it. I very much sensed an elite upper middle class (RR Wraiths et al) and then everyone else.
From PP, I took a Giant Bus bus to Ho Chi Minh City. This took around 9 hours. The $80 or so in savings for a plane ticket was not worth it; I’d just fly next time. Make sure you get your visa! I got mine through the official Vietnam government website way in advance for $15 or so. I was traveling with a couple that assumed it would’ve been VOA. Instead, they had to pay $150 each and wait for the next bus.
In HCMC aka Saigon, I stayed at The Hangout hostel (~$6/night). This in the backpacker street in District 1 (tourist zone). The hostel is OK - I very much got the sense that the staff weren’t really into meeting anyone new. They do organize a pub crawl which I participated in. Unfortunately, they just take you to multiple very loud bar and clubs. Many of us who had just met for the first time wanted to hear about each other’s travels and experiences. We were frustrated that we couldn’t talk.
Hostel aside, HCMC is one of the best places I have ever been. You can sense the energy in the air; everyone and everything is buzzing. My favorite moments from this entire trip are all here. Getting on a Grab scooter and just going from district to district was incredibly fun for this American who only uses cars and trains. The food was excellent - I went to Pho2000 and had a Pho Ga paired with delicious, cold coconut water. The hot-spice + cold-sweet combo was just something. Like every big town in Asia, you can get any cuisine you like. I headed over to Little Tokyo to the Ramen Bar for delicious ramen. I had some Indian food at Baba’s Curry. I went to some patisseries to have desserts. I had some great sushi at Sushi Nhi. Food aside, The War Remnants museum is quite good and was fascinating to take in as an American. I didn’t have time to make it to the Cho Chi tunnels.
I then flew to Phuket and took a taxi to Khao Lak for 1000 baht using BOSS (guy on facebook who runs a taxi company - booked it through FB messenger). Here, I stayed at the Centara resort for ~$100/night before my three day liveaboard (I wrote separately about that experience here). After the liveaboard, I stayed at the Briza resort for ~$80/night. I didn’t know this coming in but Khao Lak is a resort town built for families. It was definitely strange being a solo traveler in these parts but still fun. There are restaurants in and around the resorts which are generally cheaper that I ate at. If I had more time, I would have checked out the national park nearby. After a couple days, I headed back to the airport (booked again using BOSS) and then flew to Singapore.
I only went to Singapore because of Crazy Rich Asians. I wanted to check out some of the sights I saw in the movie. I stayed in the Boat Quay neighborhood at the MET Space pod capsule hotel for $35/night. It was fantastic, the staff were really friendly, and the pods were comfortable. Definitely not a place to meet other travelers but that was OK with me. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love singapore because of the hawker markets. Think of it like street food but a little more organized and housed inside. I walked around chinatown and went to the Tekka Hawker market where I had the egg paratha for breakfast. I went to the Maxwell hawker market where I ate some bibimbap. I went to Liao Fan Hawker Chan (the michelin starred place) to get the Chicken rice (which was OK, didn’t blow me away). I went to the Old Airport Road Hawker stall where I had some diced chicken w/chilli and a Kachang (dessert). I went to the ground floors of the Marina Bay Sands which was a waste of time. It’s pretty much like the bottom of the Burj Khalifa - tons of luxury shops I’d never shop at one after the other. I suppose it’s nice to walk around and window shop if you’re into that type of thing. There’s a casino in there as well as a food court. I also went to the Raffles hotel to drink a Singapore Sling - this was worth it. Probably the best cocktail I’ve ever had.
Coming from America, Singapore felt the most familiar to me. Putting aside the lack of language barrier, what I really liked about it is the melting pot element to it. There are people from all parts of the region who live there. It also was the most livable. I appreciated the clean streets, the lack of scooter honks, and the running paths + parks.
Overall the trip was great. My favorite food was the dosa I had in India followed by the Pho + Coconut water combo in HCMC. My favorite experience (excluding the wedding) was riding around in HCMC on a scooter. If I had more time, I would have spent more time in Vietnam (and maybe explored the central and northern parts of the country) and in Singapore.

3 weeks exploring Vietnam-part 1: Southern Vietnam.

I'll start with Saigon. You should spend 2 days (actually 1 is enough) exploring Saigon, it's enough to visit all the tourist attractions in the center of Saigon and Cu Chi tunnel. Honestly speaking, I won't recommend spending much time in Saigon if you want to experience the best Vietnamese culture in a short time. Notice: MANY STUDENTS WANT YOU TO PRACTISE ENGLISH WITH THEM IF YOU ARE CAUCASIAN, this is very common, so don't worry if you're asked to talk, some students will even give you a small present to thank you for your kindness. If you are a partier, you definitely ought to stay at a hostel around Bui Vien street, it only takes about $5-8 for one night as you wanna stay in a dorm room, as there are many bars and the prices are quite cheap around that area. Mekong Delta is a magnetic tourist attraction, I suggest visiting and stay here for 2 days. What's better than sitting on a small boat and watching the life on Mekong river? You have opportunities to go through the authentic Vietnamese culture by working with peasants as well! Next stop: Ba Ria-Vung Tau. Many tourists ignore this beautiful coastal province although it's really worth visiting. It's 100 km far away from Saigon. You'll pass over Ba Ria on your way to Vung Tau from Saigon. Vung Tau has gorgeous beaches, obviously, they're not as stunning as ones in Nha Trang, however, you'll love the peaceful atmosphere of the city. Most importantly, one of the biggest statues in the world is belonged to the city, it's the Jesus Christ the King statue, which is quite similar to the statue in Rio, located on the top of a mountain. Bach Dinh is another place which is worth visiting, it's a historical building, you are able see stuff used by the last king of Vietnam there. Ba Ria, in which you are able to learn how 2 traditional foods known as pho and bun (rice noodle) are made in the so-called Long Kien neighborhood, is only 25 km away from Vung Tau. Ho Tram, which is about 50km away from Ba Ria, has a very famous 5-star-hotel (and casino) whose name is The Grand Ho Tram Strip; therefore, if you want to stay at a luxury hotel, it'll be the best choice! There are a lot of other things to do here, if you need detailed information with this destination, I'm always willing to help! From Ho Tram, you can head straight to Mui Ne! In my opinion, spending 2 days in this province is enough. Mui Ne: this is called "Vietnamese desert". Endless sand and great beaches! Ponashu tower, which was built in 1200 years ago, is a place you must visit. You should spend 2 days here. Here is the link which contains some pictures of the destinations I've mentioned above: https://www.flickr.com/photos/134174473@N07/? Part 2: Central Vietnam.

I just came close to falling for the old Blackjack 21 scam. Anyone else fallen for this trick? Or, if you didn't go for it, did they come after you at a later point in time?

I'm in Saigon on holiday after working in SE Asia for the last four months. Two days ago, I was approached by a "Malaysian" guy named "Alim" and his cousin "Sharifa". They broke the ice, said they had a little sister that was going to UCLA next month (I live/work in LA and said I'd be happy to talk to her). They invited me to lunch at their house and I accepted, not wanting to be rude.
I went to lunch at the house, and "Alim"'s older brother "Alex" gave me the standard story about being a dealer at a local casino. I said I don't gamble and he should try Vegas sometime. He insisted on taking "10 minutes of my time" to show me how he cheats people. Before I knew it, "Mrs. Lee" from Singapore was there to play Mah Jong. He told her "no Mah Jong today" but that I had been there playing blackjack for hours and was up about $2k (USD). Before I knew it, they were betting tons of money and "Alex" was asking me to take his signals in order to rip off "Mrs. Lee". At this point I knew it was a scam (especially when "Mrs. Lee" had put $40k USD on the table for the "last hand"). At this point, I politely excused myself and was followed out of the room by "Alex", who was trying to tell me that he really needed my help to get the money so he could pay for his mother's bypass surgery. I told him I needed to leave because I had an appointment. They offered to get a motorbike to take me back to my hotel and I politely declined. When they asked where I was staying, I gave them the name of a hotel that's about a ten minute walk from mine, got in a normal cab, and had him drop me off on a side street near the hotel that I told the card sharks I was staying at. I weaved my way down alleys and against traffic on one-way streets, then spent 30 minutes in a coffee shop watching the street. I am now back at my hotel. Overall, I was given a free cab ride to a different part of town and fed lunch. I lost nothing. If anyone else has experience with this my question is this:
What are the odds they will come after me looking for $40k USD? Should I leave Saigon (and maybe Vietnam) tonight and make my way to some other country? I am alone here for the next 3 days until I will be with a group of 5 or 6 for the remainder of my time in country (approximately two weeks from today)?
tl;dr: I almost got roped in to the famous "Saigon Blackjack 21 scam" but ended up giving a total of $0 to the scammers and leaving. I am fairly certain I was not followed back to my hotel. Is this over or will they be looking for me from this point forward?
