Kai Bickle's world came tumbling down one night in May 2019, when he attended a dinner party at a lavishly decorated mansion overlooking the golden sands of Venice Beach in Los Angeles. The host was his father, Peter Nygard, a Canadian fashion tycoon famed for the hedonistic lifestyle he pursued at a global portfolio of high-end properties, including vast residences in Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal, as well as New York, and, most notoriously, a Mayan-themed 'private luxury resort' in the Bahamas. Modelling himself on Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, the flamboyant Nygard, now 79, kept a revolving harem of girlfriends. Those caught up (often completely unwittingly) in this web had included actresses Susan Anton and Jennifer O'Neill, stripper-turned-reality star Anna Nicole Smith, and a former Wheel Of Fortune card turner by the name of Vanna White. His Caribbean parties, meanwhile, tended to attract a better class of A-lister. Past visitors to the island property had ranged from Jane Seymour and Bo Derek to Robert De Niro, , Michael Jackson and Joan Collins, not to mention and , who were photographed there in the early 2000s on an innocuous family holiday. The 2019 bash, during one of Peter's occasional business trips to LA, was to be a more down-to-earth affair. Roughly 20 guests, including Kai, 38, and his younger brother Jessar (one of roughly ten offspring Nygard has fathered via more than seven women) had been invited for food and drinks, followed by a late-night poker game. That was the plan, at least. But Kai never made it to the card- table. Instead, he fled the lavish premises in a state of distress, shortly after dinner, believing that he had just witnessed his father attempting to sexually assault an eight-year-old girl. Details of this ugly development are (it should be stressed) strongly disputed, and we shall examine them later. But the incident would kick-start an extraordinary chain of events that culminated just before Christmas, with the arrest of Peter Nygard on nine charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Currently behind bars, with his $900 million (£660 million) business empire in tatters and the FBI poring over his computer hard-drives, the fallen tycoon has now been accused of rape or sexual assault by at least 57 women. Several of Nygard's accusers were children when the alleged crimes took place, and many claim they were drugged. At least 57 women have accused him. He will appear in court in Canada next week, seeking bail as he fights extradition to the USA. It is, perhaps, the most high-profile and shocking sex case since handcuffs were slapped on Jeffrey Epstein. And in a remarkable twist, it turns out that a leading figure in the increasingly public campaign to prosecute Mr Nygard is his aforementioned son, Kai. Upcoming documentary: ‘Unseamly’ Canadian Designer Peter Nygård True Crime Documentary Behind the scenes, I can reveal that Kai has spent the past 18 months secretly helping both the U.S. and Canadian authorities investigate his own father's alleged crimes. Keeping his role hidden from Nygard and his associates for several months, he has worked tirelessly to assist victims, and their legal teams. On the personal front, he has changed his name (taking up his mother's surname to become Kai Zen Bickle) and used his influence over various Nygard companies to block efforts to move his assets offshore, fearing that would allow him to flee. 'We have been engaged in a brutal battle against my father and his enablers,' is how Kai summed things up when we spoke this week. 'He has become my arch-nemesis. I no longer regard him as my father . . . He is a monster. I am now here to serve in any way I can, to support survivors and the justice process and also to help expose the people who covered up his crimes.' Perhaps most remarkably of all, Kai recently helped two of his younger siblings, one of whom remains a minor, to sue Peter Nygard over claims he 'engineered' the rape of his own sons. In an extraordinary lawsuit filed in August, the boys claimed that their leathery, multi-millionaire father instructed one of his long-standing girlfriends (who was also a sex worker) to 'make a man' out of them. The first of these alleged attacks (which, again, are vehemently denied by Nygard) took place in the Bahamas 2004, when the son was 15 and the woman was in her mid-20s. The second occurred in Winnipeg in 2018, when the younger child was 14 and the woman was in her 40s. Court papers filed by the boys stated that the unnamed girlfriend was instructed to seduce Nygard's son by showering in his bathroom so that he 'could see her naked'. Then she raped him. Afterwards, she allegedly told the boy he 'wasn't bad' for a 'baby.' The next morning, Nygard's girlfriend brought him breakfast in bed, kissing him on the lips and announcing: 'Mommy's got you.' Kai says he first became aware of this appalling incident last spring, and was 'sickened' to hear his brothers' claims. He would often yell and scream at his staff. 'We all spoke and decided the best course of action was to file a lawsuit publicly in the hope that other survivors would feel safe to come forward and also file criminally against Nygard,' he says. 'We were originally going to have me in the suit as my young brother's guardian, but in the end decided not to because it would reveal to Nygard that I was working against him . . . At the time I was [secretly] doing everything I could to improve the odds that he would get arrested.' To appreciate the extraordinary journey taken by Kai, we must wind the clock back to the mid-1980s, when his father was one of Canada's most talked-about self-made millionaires. The son of penniless immigrants from Finland, Peter Nygard had launched his empire in the late 1960s, with an $8,000 (£6,000) investment in a struggling fashion firm. By the time he was 30, the company had become one of North America's most successful suppliers of leisure and sportswear, while his flamboyant eccentricities, which included keeping parrots in his office and filling the lobby of Nygard HQ with bronze busts of himself, turned him into an object of public fascination. In 1987, the party-loving entrepreneur purchased a 4.5-acre patch of the island of New Providence in the Bahamas and set about turning it into a 'dream home' where he could indulge his champagne lifestyle. Over the ensuing years, he built 150,000 sq ft of Mayan-themed buildings, stretching over a dozen 'cabana-style' residences. The buildings at Nygard Cay eventually included a casino, a disco hut (with cameras beneath the dance floor, reportedly to shoot images of revellers from below), and the world's largest sauna, a 6,000 sq ft lodge made from 2ft-thick Canadian pine logs. In the grounds were fake volcanoes that belched dry ice, a flock of peacocks, stone cobras which hissed steam at sunset, 60 ft towers festooned with hundreds of flaming torches (lit nightly by staff) and giant statues of nude women, purportedly modelled on some of Nygard's favourite girlfriends. At weekends, he would host lavish parties, which appeared on various TV documentaries, including Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous. The place became a magnet for freeloading celebrities and, while Kai believes they generally had the most fleeting and brief relationship with Nygard, photos of their visits were then plastered across company literature and websites. Prince Andrew, to cite one example, was recorded for posterity wandering with the long-haired fashion magnate on the beach, wearing blue shorts and boat shoes. Born in the 1980s, Kai spent the first three years of his life in the Bahamas until his mother, Patricia, left Nygard, with whom she'd had three children but never married. They moved first to California and then to the Pacific Northwest in the U.S. Over subsequent years, he had almost no regular contact with the fashion tycoon aside from occasional visits during school holidays, where he met various half-siblings. 'He would have one family weekend per year at his lake cottage, and a few days set aside for Christmas,' says Kai of the somewhat unorthodox arrangement. 'During those times, the days were filled with activities like horseback riding or mini golf. 'He could be a very charismatic person when he wanted to be and the family weekends were very light and brief.' In the very limited time he spent with his father during childhood, Kai saw nothing that gave him reason to suspect that Peter Nygard was guilty of criminality, though he did have a highly volatile personality. 'He would yell and scream at his staff often, and that always was upsetting to everyone around it, but he would describe his yelling as 'passion' because of his 'high standards',' Kai says. Nygard's children were further told that he 'lived a consensual, non-monogamous lifestyle,' Kai says. 'He made speeches at dinner to family when we were together to talk about how he hoped everyone got a wonderful partner and wished that he could find that special someone, but that it wasn't the life for him. 'He also had girlfriends that were persistently with him, always two or three, and often they were around for years. He wasn't embarrassed about it. He flaunted it on TV, it was part of his brand, something he showed the whole world. He was proud of it.' Be that as it may, rumours of predatory behaviour by Nygard —and worse — had occasionally reared their ugly head, only to be quickly suppressed: a relatively easy task before the internet. In 1980, for example, he was charged with the rape of an 18-year-old, but the charge was dropped when the complainant refused to testify. In 1996, three female employees meanwhile filed sexual harassment complaints in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It looked like his hand was on her thigh, rubbing. One, a 39-year-old communications manager, said that, when called into Nygard's office, she would 'find him in a state of undress . . . with his hands down the front of his pants, fondling himself.' He settled by giving the women $18,500 (£13,600) and denied any wrongdoing. Then, in 2010, a Canadian TV network put out a Panorama-style documentary about Nygard, focusing on alleged sex abuse and harassment of former employees. It quoted a former stewardess on his private plane who alleged that on one journey — during which Nygard was accompanied by a troupe of topless women — he lost his temper with staff, shouting: 'You are nothing! You are garbage! I am God!' The programme also alleged that Nygard had engaged in 'inappropriate sexual contact' with a young woman who had been brought to his home in 2003 from the Dominican Republic. Nygard denied that either incident had happened, and sued to stop the documentary being broadcast. Fast forward to May 2019, however, and those ugly incidents were largely forgotten. Kai, who was by then in his late 30s, had worked for his father's companies for just over two years after leaving college, but quit to pursue a career in activism and health science. Nygard's trip to Los Angeles afforded them a rare opportunity to catch up, so he attended the aforementioned dinner party in Venice Beach. As the night wore on, he recalls becoming uncomfortable about his father's behaviour towards an eight-year-old girl, who was attending with her mother, one of Nygard's old girlfriends. 'He's got her sitting right next to him at dinner, which is usually his girlfriend chair. And he's a creature of routine. So I'm already thinking this is weird. 'He's trying to act like the Papa. It was just weird . . . I'm noticing things. I'm noticing that he's telling her little secrets at dinner. Putting his hand close to her ear and going all hush-hush.' At the end of dinner, most of the other 20-odd guests got up to adjourn to the card table. However, Kai adds: 'I'm still watching him. Her chair gets pushed back. He brings her round to him. 'She was on his right side. He brings her to his left side, with his arm around her waist, and I see his elbow change and start moving as if — it looked to me, I couldn't see, but it looked like his hand was on her upper thigh, and rubbing. That's what it looked like to me . . . Everything in my body told me he was doing something terrible.' 'I had a huge adrenaline rush and I immediately told the mother to get her daughter away from him,' he adds. 'I stood up next to him and looked in his eyes. At that moment, for me, it was like all the walls were crashing down around him . . . And I realised that, yeah, he's probably trying to groom that girl.' Nygard vigorously denied wrongdoing, and even called Kai 'sick' for thinking as much. But Kai was unconvinced. Then, in February last year, ten women filed a bombshell lawsuit in New York claiming that the fashion magnate had used wealth and status to 'entice underage girls' from 'young, impressionable and often impoverished backgrounds' into his home, where they would be 'plied with alcohol' and (some allege) date-rape drugs, before being taken to Nygard's private quarters, where he would 'assault, rape and sodomise' them. Court papers claimed they were then coerced into joining a globe-trotting harem of sex workers paid thousands of dollars from Nygard's company funds and trafficked around the world on his company's private jet, which reportedly boasts a stripper pole. One alleged victim, who was just 14 at the time, claimed Nygard raped her and paid her $5,000 (£3,700). Another said her encounter with Nygard began with him showing her pornography after which he raped her, 'causing her extraordinary trauma and pain', the suit states. Three of his existing ten accusers were 14 at the time. Three more were 15. Within days, dozens more alleged victims had come forward. By the summer, some 57 survivors were pursuing legal action — and the number of alleged victims had reached 100. Kai again confronted his father, only to be told it was all 'lies' and asked to speak out publicly in his father's support. But days later a friend texted Kai to complain about a recent visit to Nygard's house in Los Angeles. 'He said he'd brought a female friend with him, who had one or two drinks and had started to feel very high. Nygard took her up to his room and aggressively had sex with her, not using a condom. 'When I heard that, I knew he was not only as bad as people said he was, but was a dangerous criminal and had to be stopped.' He duly alerted the authorities about the friend's message. In a podcast called Live To Walk Again, released this week, he revealed that he began helping both the police and the alleged victims' lawyers, who he regards as 'heroes'. Over the summer, Kai also used official positions held in Nygard firms to block two apparent efforts to move assets overseas, amid concerns that the tycoon might flee to evade justice. PODCAST EPISODE: Peter Nygard Discusses His Father 'Through the course of ten months I also helped several survivors to file criminally against him, and spent countless hours on the phone with survivors, lawyers and authorities,' he says. Last month Nygard was arrested on U.S. charges at a home in the Royalwood area of Winnipeg. He spent Christmas behind bars and has consistently denied any wrongdoing, saying he 'expects to be vindicated' in court. Kai has renounced his inheritance and is working on 'making the world a better place' by campaigning to close legal loopholes exploited by sex offenders. 'I'm very happy earning my own money, as I have all my life. We've never had a trust fund or an allowance, and since his money has been made through pain and suffering, I won't accept a potential inheritance,' he says. His father's cash, he says, should instead go towards compensating victims. 'My focus now is to help the healing process.'

Hey Sportsfans — it's time for Week 4 of baseball's 2020 Power Rankings — Four weeks into the season and we've learned a lot: some teams win, some teams lose, and some don't play baseball at all. We solider on, trying to make sense of a season best described as 'baseball as viewed by a drunk Jake Peavy through a broken kaleidoscope'. You may notice the Cardinals are being treated differently this week. There was one tie this week between the #22 and #23 teams -- our 2nd tiebreaker, run differential, was used to break. Difference of just two runs! Every voter has their own style / system and the only voting instructions are these:
"To an extent determined individually, you must take into account how strong a team is right now and likely to be going forward. You must, to some degree, give weight to the events and games of the previous week."

If you can't beat this team while its firing on half its cylinders, how the hell do you beat them when they're firing on all of them?

Bit of a rough week for the Yankees, but the bats are still alive and well against pitchers I've never heard of. Everyone knows Judge leads the league in HR, but did you know DJ leads the league in Singles? Great to see him having a bit of a repeat from last season's performance. Additionally, Britton and Green have been fantastic out of the pen, and Chapman is going to be back at some point.

Mon. had a ten run W vs. the M's. Next was TEX- Piscotty hit the 2nd walk-off GS of our year then we finished a quick sweep. The HOU series opener was cursed- we had 15 LOBs, left a runner on 3rd with 0/1 outs 3 seperate times, but down to our last strike A. Allen hit a single and M. Semien sealed the game. Montas/Luzardo/Bassit were dynamic and our pen is the league's best. Our lineup might lead MLB in Ks, but we're second in BBs. Just before sweeping the cheats R. Laureano, worth 1 bWAR, got his 2nd HBP of the day. We lead the league in those. After jawing at the RP, he arrived at 1st base. Their batting coach, a human dirtbag, taunted our mvp into a brawl even if it was he worked for a club shamed by scandals and a HS JV quality bullpen.

The Cubs played well against the Royals, and then the Cardinals series was postponed. With no evidence that any Cardinals players actually went to a casino or broke protocol more than any other team, I believe that fans making moral judgments against the Cardinals are wrong. Perhaps we shouldn't blame teams for getting a deadly disease during a global pandemic; getting the coronavirus is not a moral indictment. Let's be better fans and better people as the world is falling apart.

Meanwhile the bullpen has a sub-1 ERA if you take away a single nightmare outing by Brad Hand. The less said about the batting order the better, but there's no way they can rank dead last in BA and SLG all year, right guys? G-g-guys?

The Rockies have the 2nd best run differential in baseball going into Sunday's games due in large part to their starting pitching. Their offense has been middle of the pack so far but that's with Nolan Arenado hitting about as poor as we've ever seen from him. Charlie Blackmon is the early favorite for NL MVP as he racks up a .446/.475/.679 slash. Last week: 5-2. This week: 3 vs AZ & 3 vs Texas.

The bats still need to come around, you would think it'd be hard to stay ice cold in Florida and all. The most inspiring things for Rays fans this week were the retunr of Austin Meadows and having a non-Zunino catcher not only bat, but also get the clutch walkoff to send the Yanks home. Let us all pray Charlie Morton is ok and flap on.

Our pitching is, for the most part, bad. Seriously, almost our entire bullpen is comprised of AA and A rookies with a handful of MLB appearances under their belt. When the pitching is not bad, our offense is bad and we can't provide enough run support. I've seen enough extra inning games this season. Hard to feel confident in the team right now, but hopefully the beginning of a homestand will turn things around.

Eloy getting tangled in the left field netting is going to be on lowlight reels for a long time and his 0-20 slide makes it worse. Thankfully, we're looking at a 4 day weekend with the Cards series in doubt. If you told the fanbase in the spring we would be 8-8 after 16 games, most would be happy. A week of the offense averaging 2.5 runs makes 8-8 feel a lot worse. On the plus side, Giolito has looked like an ace again and Moncada is on a 20 game on base streak.

It’s a special kind of hell having the best rotation in the entire league and the worst bullpen in the entire league. Yesterday’s loss was a microcosm of the season: leading 2-1 going into the 6th inning and trailing 9-2 by the end of the 7th. Michael Lorenzen has surrendered 10 earned runs in 5.1 innings while the combination of Gray, Bauer, Disco, and Mahle have allowed the same number in 64.1 innings. If you remove Tejay Antone’s stellar mopup job against Chicago, the Reds’ bullpen has an unfathomably bad 8.32 ERA. In other news, they’re batting .203 as a team and got shutout by the Indians two nights in a row.

The Nats did not respond well coming out of their break. They have played poorly against AL East power-team, the Baltmiore Orioles, and have not given a lot of reason for hope. However, Sean Doolittle is a national treasure and it is completely unacceptable to harass a human on Twitter for poor sports performance. If you logged into your account and tweeted or DM'd Doo, you should be ashamed of yourself and turn in your World Series gear because you don't deserve it.

This was an interesting week. Just when you think the Mets are in freefall they come back, and go 4-2, including taking 2 of 3 from "The Best Team in the League" (technically, at the time) Miami Marlins. On top of that Conforto is swinging a hot bat, the team has scored a couple of actual runs, and deGrom even got a win (two in a row!). However, Alonso is quickly turning into Adam Dunn with a better (at times) glove, and the bullpen is still shaky despite Jared Hughes being the bright spot nobody saw coming. The Phillies didn't have all that bad of a week all things considered. After a week long break, they split a series with the Yankees and went 1-2 against the Braves. Harper and Realmuto have looked great, and the introduction of Spencer Howard a better (?) Arrieta means the Phillies might just have a servicable rotation. The bullpen is a different story. If they can somehow put together a not terrible bullpen, they should have a shot at the playoffs and maybe some more.

What this team has been able to do with a bunch of replacement players is a testament to the coaching staff Miami has. Primarily, the bullpen. We may have even found a couple diamonds in the rough. That being said, replacement batters havent fared as well. After some initial success, solid Mets pitching has shown that the lineup sorely misses Ramirez, Rojas, Cooper and Alfaro at the plate. Once our guys come back from covid, this team should be able to finish out tough games like yesterdays. Wouldnt be a surprised to see them finish at or slightly above .500 this season. We got Blue jays and Braves this week.

If the Tigers can continue to be competitive, look to find Casey Mize getting the call sooner rather than later to help shore up the back end of the rotation. This week: 3 vs. CWS, 2 vs STL (although this is unlikely), and 3 vs. CLE.

MadBum hasn't looked like himself all year and is currently being evaluated for back issues in Phoenix, while Ray is as frustrating as ever. Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly have looked legitimately fantastic, but it's hard to get by on two good starting pitching performances a week.

Have been watching old kannada movies in lockdown as I started to miss going out in the city & here are my reviews or opinions on movies I watched. - part 7
Jedara bale - Noir - 3.5/5 - Available on Youtube Jedara bale is inspired by James bond movies that were all the rage then & is still. Director duo of Dorai-Bhagwan tries to emulate the same in jedara bale with Rajkumar playing the role of a secret agent joined by Narasimha raju. It follows the Secret agent story template to the last detail, with even including a daring stunt scene that involves a chase/fight in an under construction building which felt realistic & serves well to the spy thriller narrative. Story revolves around a kidnapped scientist who is tortured to give up his formula/recipe to mint fake currency notes, with Rajkumar & narasimharaju the secret agent duo on hunt for them. Movie features all the tropes of Secret agent movie with flashy gadgets, femme fatales, an array of bad guys, a dodgy casino & a rich businessman in the middle of all this. What works for this movie is "swag" of Rajkumar who owns his role as secret agent & his charisma seeps through every scene he is in, he is enthralling in his role & as usual carries the movie in its entirety. Supporting cast features Ashwath, Udaykumar, Dinesh, Jayanti etc who all do justice to their role, especially Uday kumar as a Casino owner, who is menacing as well as frustrated & plays a formidable villain to Rajkumar. Another refreshing fact was the use of the city in the movie, most of the movie shows the city as this lively, vibrant creature, which gives a movie an exotic feel which is huge plus instead of usual deserted roads & set pieces that is seen in other movies. Aa karala raatri - Drama - 3.5/5 - Available on Hotstar Aa karala raatri is a debut movie of Anupama gowda & she shines brightly in this. Directed by Dayal padmanabhan, movie has a stage drama feel to it & director's choice of locations are spot on. The run down home, in a desolate valley sets an ominous tone throughout the movie. Movie starts with a strangetraveler played by JK who arrives at this village & decides to spend the night in run down house owned by Muthanna's, played by Rangayana raghu, family. Then the stranger's behavior oscillates from friendly, to preachy, to flashy, to demanding all the while which results in conflicts with Anupama gowda, who plays Muthanna's daughter. Anupama gowda plays a difficult role as a jaded bitter woman who has lived devoid of any hope of companionship & her raging chemistry with JK sizzles through the screen. From delivering her lines which borders on crass & detailed with conviction to portraying mannerisms of her dangerous mindset, she over-shines veterans like Rangayana raghu & Veena sundar, who plays the role of her mom. JK seems to be the weak point of the movie as he fails to be a sort of an enigma into his character & instead plays it as one-dimensional character & his lines/dialogues just service the story without altering the tone of his character which would have made the final conclusion that much shocking. However, the story is the king here with a dark fairy tale undertones, adapted from a russian story & Anupama gowda's brilliant acting not only saves this movie from being just another artistic misfire & instead makes it an experience to relish. Hope to see more of Anupama gowda & such novel efforts. Gayatri madhuve - Comedy - 1.5/5 - Available on Youtube Anant nag plays a double role in this comedy movie which revolves around the marriage of titular Gayatri, played by Ambika, who plays a pretty face & nothing else. Anant nag plays a dual role of an innocent nerdy rich man looking for a bride & a poor seasoned street smart mechanic. Movie starts with three bachelors who are in love with Gayatri, who is unaware of their existence. The start was the enjoyable part of this movie as seeing these bachelors compete with each other & then the nerdy Anant nag promised a shenanigans filled comedy movie. But once this part of story is dealt with the movie meanders aimlessly & starts being a chore to watch & every scene sucks the fun out of the movie. A bumbling anant nag is used as a poor excuse for comedy & Tiger prabhakar is used for action segments, with Vajramuni wasted in his role as a cunning driver who plots to switch rich Anant nag with poor Anant nag in Gayatri's marriage for monetary benefits. Only saving grace is the first 15 mins or so & then Dinesh chewing the scenes with authority. Movie has songs which has a nostalgic value with catchy lyrics, so if you are a fan on old romantic kannada songs, you can listen to couple of bangers here. Overall movie is forgettable & I am glad it had a short run-time. Ibbara hendira muddina police - Comedy - 5/5 - Available on Youtube A comedy classic from early 90s, a fun filled story made in all Tamil, kannada & telugu by Relangi Narasimha Rao who hits jackpot with this perfect family entertainer. Shashikumar plays the dual role here one of a cop married to Tara & Nirosha, Another an unemployed youth looking for a stable job. I haven't seen the Tamil & telugu version but Shashikumar knocks it out of the park here & I cant imagine any other actor in his place. This movie doesn't have a wasted minute or a character. Tara & Nirosha, as quarreling wives of Shashi kumar are so believable in their animosity for each other watching them console each other at the second half was a comedy gut punch. Umashree & Mysore lokesh as cattle farming couples capture the hearts in their iconic roles, the ease with which they assimilate into the story & get involved in the mistaken identity shenaningans is a laugh riot. Mukhyamantri chandru & Rekha das with their "Pada pooja" ritual gag is a guaranteed laugh, the Gag never ages & gets a laugh everytime its presented. Seeing Mukyamantri chandru nailing the comic timing with simple & natural mannerisms contrasts how Rangayana raghu does it with over the top acting & shows how rare a talent like Mukyamantri chandru is. Overall a perfect family entertainer where every scene, dialogues, gags are iconic. The Jokes range from adult to childish & gives something for everyone to enjoy. The supporting cast of Mukhyamantri chandru, Umashree, Mysore lokesh rivals Golmaal rashakrishna & this is a shining example of Shashikumar's Golden era in the 90s, a versatile, charismatic actor. Watch this for a Guaranteed entertainment for the whole family & its just so good even songs had me grinning ear to ear while rest of the movie had me laughing out loud. Indrajith - Action/Thriller - 4.5/5 - Available on Youtube Indrajith is a quintessential action movie of the 90s dealing with corruption & politics. One way to describe will be to call it Police story for adults. K V Raju the director takes a lion's share of credit for this movie, his fresh direction, ripe with symbolism & metaphors in every single scene keeps you glued to the screen. The movie starts of as a hardboiled thriller as stylish as any of the John woo films. Movie sacrifices a gritty feel to a stylish narrative. Starring Ambarish as an honest daredevil Inspector Indrajith, who blazes the screen with masculinity, churning out the complex dialogues with authority tearing through the story. Every line uttered by Amabrish gives you goosebumps, its not crass lines aiming for masses but a conditioned well thought lines that wouldn't feel out of place in a literary play. Dialogues are extremely well crafted & will need multiple re-watches to enjoy it. Ambarish embraces the angry rebel personality that got him his fame & one can see why he is so revered as Rebel star, he is fully committed to his role & is able to match the herculean efforts put forth by K V Raju. Background score from Hamsalekha is timeless, his composition comes alive on screen complementing the tone of scenes, adrenalin jumps high & emotions hits hard with Hamsalekha. More than the songs, which are amazing, the background score rules the movie. Its on par, if not better, than Hamsalekha's partnership with Ravichandran. The movie is a holy trinity of world class vision by K V Raju, melodious compositions of Hamsalekha & Rebel star Ambarish at his very best. Supporting cast of Devaraj, Deepika, Shashikumar, Doddanna & Disco Shanti are all portrayed well. Shashikumar & Disco shaanti as unhinged villains deliver a terrifying performance as antagonists. Devaraj plays a crucial role with ease, with Doddanna doing what he does best as a corrupt officer full of menace. Plot is reminiscent of PunisheDaredevil comics of a good man force to turn vigilante & if you have adored Ugramm, KGF or Police story, then you must watch Indrajith which puts out a template for Action movies which in my opinion is yet to be matched balancing both the mass & class elements. Would rate it as the best Action movie in kannada cinema & if not for the climax which is bit too cliched, this would have been a 5/5 movie for me. Please watch it. Minchina Ota - Thriller - 3/5 - Available on Youtube Minchina Ota is Shankar nag's debut movie as a Director & it stars Shankar nag, Anant nag, Lokanath, Priya tendulkar & Ramesh bhat in prominent roles. Starring both Nag bros & being directed by Shankar nag, the movie feels a bit under-cooked compared to the standard that Shankar nag is usually associated with. Nag bros join Loknath as car thieves, due to financial circumstances & they are later met by Priya tendulkar who plays love interest to Anant nag. This ensemble cast is a joy to watch & their heist part is enjoyable, while Shankar nag effortlessly plays his role, Anant nag as Tony seems out of depth in most of his scenes, his transitions from angry mechanic to reluctant thief to masterminding the group is not smoothly done & feels a bit jarring, Shankar nagintends to show Tony as a perpetually angry man, allowing his rage & fury to dictate terms for him but Anant nag's portrayal falls short as Tony doesn't materialize as a complex character, in contrast Loknath & Shankar nag act around him effortlessly. Direction by Shankar nag shows his expertise & ambition which becomes apparent in his future efforts, Shankar nag never resorts to cheap tricks or theatrics, as chase scenes, jail scenes seems gritty & real. Movie has a documentary feel to it & allows the natural settings in the scenes to shine through, one never feels like the movie is watched behind the camera lens & instead transports you into the movie & to its era. Not as enjoyable as his other efforts but one can see the ambition that Shankar nag had & see the shadows of his love for unapologetic hard hitting portrayals of story & characters which gets much better with Accident & Malgudi days.
So, kinda wanted to group all my thoughts on all the newly revealed bronze and silver cards, as well as look at some of the old silvers and bronzes in context. And talk about thematically cause some of the non story classes got cool thematically. Ill be keeping it simple, rating the class’s support 1 for amazing, 2 for wait and see, 3 for awful, as well as giving a basic description Forest Class rating: 3 Only few remotely good and synergistic (if you can even call them that) cards, and the rest are trash. Except Carmine. She’s not trash. She’s a flaming heap of toxic nuclear waste. Cactus Cowboy 1 The only 1 in the set for forest, and it’s just solid all around. Forest Patroller 2 Payoff for rides, but isn’t really necessary imo especially since Forest doesn’t have too many good generators to not spend on Loxis or Sukuna Lookout elf 3 Meh. Fairy support but not good at it. Hornet strike 2 Not bad removal option, 3pp for 1 removal, 5pp for 2, and 8 pp for 3 and maybe keeping some on board, but does look a bit over costed, and doing nothing but removal isn’t amazing in the current meta. Varmint Hunter 2 More reasonable ride payoff card, can be a better BKB on 4 with ride, but kinda not the best outside of it maybe. Corrosive Thorns 2 I guess it works as both Fairy Dragon support but also a fine control tool against tokens, but that’s not really enough to warrant too much of an inclusion. Also sucks the brambles effect is fairies only tho. Carmine 5 463 782 siiiiiigh I’m not even going to dignify this abomination it’s full name. Can’t wait for all the BTC clips of Chipper Skipper dying to it. But I think the worst thing about it is the main body. Why, oh WHY can she destroy herself, possibly wasting 6+pp to do one accelerate?! Calling her trash is an insult to trash. Sword Class rating: 2 Sword doesn’t look too bad, nothing extremely outstanding but also nothing too terrible. Naht’s boytoys 2 I mean what 2pp 3/3 that gives later follower 1/1, but gives 2/2 to the opponent. Can be used to screw with enemy rides though. Shinobi Tanuki 1 Ambush makes it easier to buff, cheap, and against foes without proper hard removal can spiral out of control ala Sarissa. Frontline Instructor 2 Better OG fencer from Standard, and contains a board buff later on with Rally. But whether it’s better than Stroke of conviction is another story. Bandit Raid 2.5 Good take two card, where you’re not guaranteed multiple Amelia. Otherwise it’s pretty meh. Outlaw Gunner 2 3/3/3 isn’t bad, but fitting her into some of your later turns might be kinda hard, but she could see play since rally 5 is pretty low. Dramatic Retreat 2 Better soul conversion jokes aside, this can’t really be used on Tokens to not pollute the deck, and banishing a big boi that isn’t the world or Arriet or some weird combo isn’t good tempo. Still basically soul conversion tho. Stalwart Slinger 2.5 Natural 5/5/6 that deals 3 isn’t a bad deal at all, but lacks synergies or all around power to warrant Constructive play. Great T2 card. Rune Class rating: 1 Rune not only got a good amount of synergistic support, but the other archetypes supported got some great support as well. Few outliers though. Rivaylian Deputy 1 2/1/2 that draws a card and sets up your Vincent/Maiser plays, or just higher tempo later. Also Curves pretty disgustingly into [Passionate Potioneer] Crystal Fencer 1 While it doesn’t draw, it’s great for tempo in the early game being a 3/3/3 that spellboosts, but the card keeps you in the game in the late game by making your top decked Kuons and newly duped runies much more easily playable. Mirror witch 2.7453? I have absolutely no idea how to judge this card. 4/3/7 unconditional storm is absolutely disgusting, especially with All the buff amulets rune got. But giving your opponent their own 4/3/7 that she can’t deal with on her own is... atrociously horrible. Terra Nova 1.5 4/4/4 worth of stats on 2 bodies with partial wars while also buffing the entire board by 1 atk each without any cost at all, especially not 10 shadows isnt bad at all if board rune works, but the real nasty part is if 1 other follower is on board, you get 3 procs of Vincent’s effect, meaning 3 AOE to all enemies. Scorching blast 1 On one hand, could be meh Spellboost support, 1pp deal 5 in that deck is pretty good, but the REAL use is Item shop- early game removal that costs 0 during shop chains meaning more pings going face is EXTREMELY good for that deck. Artistic Arcanist 1 A possible 5/6/5 if he’s the only one on board, or possibly giving that 6 attack to a follower going face. Also gives an amulet that doesn’t leave when a follower enters play, as well as a 1pp Add a Vincent spell to your hand at the end of your turn effect, giving you 3 Vincent spells, meaning 3 AOE. Oh, and did I tell you his fanfare gives ANOTHER 3 Vincent Spells, meaning 3 more AOE, including Face? Pretty good. Golem Marshal 1 First off, great Accel, both in Vince/Maiser rune and just for Spellboost, cause 1pp spell that buffs incoming shikigami is goood, it’s also just a spell that gives a Steed without summoning anything can be really useful for setting up Maiser chains, but a 7/9/15 with 2 wards, added value over multiple turns, AND gives you 2 Vincent spells and/or 2 Maiser Spells is really freaking good. Dragon Class rating: 2 Has some good support, but between a lack of a game plan other than buff Reggie ramp play big dudes and 1 or 2 good supports dragon got nothing too big at all this expansion. BTW the Artisan/Blacksmith thematic is a nice touch. Wyrmfire Engineer 1.75 Hard to judge, but you can curve this into bike into Reggie on curve to ramp, and it can be used as a better Pyne in overflow, or to buff storm Reggie/Erntz, but does seem clunky outside overflow thunderous Roar 1 2pp deal 3 outside overflow, 2pp deal 7 and draw a card in overflow is amazing. Does have anti synergy with DJD, but he’s not in rota forever. Mermaid Guide 2 3/3/3 storm is not to be taken lightly, as seen previously by mechaclaw Elf, but at the same time, is this really what discard wants or needs? Or just has room for? pumpkin dragon 3 Basically a dragon’s nest with less healing, but more immediate effects, and a shitty body. Dragonic Counsel 1 3pp Graceful Charity aside, this card is 2pp draw 2 in the early game, while also adding a 4th through 6th copies of Scalebound Plight into your hand, which is easily one of the best disco cards. Fantastic card. Dragonfolk Artificer 1.5 You can buff it... to get more buffs? Outside this in overflow, nobody in dragon benefits from buff chains, and you can’t use its buffs in overflow anyway. You can set up for Reggie buffs or chef buffs with this card... but you’re using cards which can buff Reggie/chef anyway to do it. Overflow effect seems nice for clearing board tho, I do like it, but we’ll see Azureflame Dragonewt 3 Uhhhhhh board clear maybe I guess? Shadow Class rating: 1 Shadow seems to have a solid gameplan this expansion with it’s Silvers and Bronzes, and most of it’s cards fit an aggressive gameplan to burn the opponent down. Great theme with miners and how utterly fatal those were back in the day, especially with all the gold rushes. Bone Fanatic 1 1pp [Orator of the Bones], except on turn 1, but still having a 1 drop is great. Enhance is better than OG skull lord, but pretty sure it’s not what you wanna be doing. Cursed Coin 1.25 Amazing draw option for Shadow for decks which don’t mind shadows and board space. Only reason it’s not a 1 is because fitting it in decks with deck space issues or shadow hunger isn’t the wisest idea. Skeleton Dreamer 1 Buffs a stormer that comes down next turn, or maybe even a Sarc wraith to actually contest board. More attack on stormers basically. And more value on 3 drops. Grudge Teller 1 Key component of new Shadow burn decks. You reanimate 3 a bunch of times, summon this, and burn bunch of your opponent’s Hp, and profit. Abysmal Wraith 1 Basically almost an unconditional Dark General. Even on Curve. Even on Reanimate. Also synergistic with billet bikes and rides. Necroimpulse 1 While this might seem more expensive than it’s cousin Terra Nova, you have to remember this is 8 face damage for 4 in a vacuum, ignoring the 5th follower on board or any rides buffing the ghosts. And unlike [Phantom Howl], these ghosts are unconditional. Gold Mine Necromancer 2 Base form is kinda expensive, and condition on accel are meh, but turning a 1/1 into a 3/3 and dealing 2 face damage isn’t bad at all for 1pp. Not too sure about base form though. Blood Class rating: 1 Blood got a very synergistic set in terms of bronzes and silvers, and many are quite strong as well. BTW, best aesthetic in the entire set- GAMBLERS! And old Wild West casinos! Really cool stuff. Spiderweb Array 1 Basically a 3/3/4 ward that gives an opponent’s follower the inability to attack. Great control tool. roulette Vampire 1 It repairs your Midgame on 6 when it pops, it gives 3 amulets total for Ruinous Spider, and it curves extremely well into Ravening Corruption. Did I mention overstatted, Rush, and 2APC’s? Fulminating Berserker 1 Accel first off is great. 2pp deal 3 draw 1 with no downsides other than needing an amulet on your side is amazing. Especially in a class with Avarice. Body is also good, with 6/6 storm unconditionally, and you can buff with rides. Scrappy Werewolf 1 Brings you to wrath when not in it, and is a 2/3/3 storm in wrath amazing card in a deck that needs more finishing power Bloodfall 2 While it seems like amazing card economy at first glance, remove 3pp worth of value for 1pp, it’s inability to help in more lethal situations is a major minus. redcap 1 This thing can spiral out of control. With just a single APC, this guy becomes a 3/5/7. And the axe is a minor benefit as more discard fodder for showdown. Amazing pull from Volteo too. Craps Demon 1 First off, bane is great in combination with ward and/or rush, especially on a cheap 2pp follower. The fact that it heals some damage on top of it is great. The fact that it heAls often a lot (6) when you need it is great as well. this is also thematically the coolest card in the set- you gamble your buff on him to roll his dice, and get defender back based on the result, but in a pinch he rigs the game highly in your favour also a great Volteo target. Haven Class rating: 1 Haven got a lot of synergistic support for Amulet and/or Ward, with almost no pack filler. benevolent Blight 2 With Kel gone, Haven is starved for AOE. And although the lack of body is highly noticeable, the heal, draw, clear, and enhance for more of the above later on may be a decent tech option for later on. Revolver Eagle 1 Better divine birdsong, or that other card that maybe rotated out getting APC + an ordinary divine birdsong for the same price is splendid. Body isn’t bad, 2 bodies one with rush the other a 3atk storm isn’t the worst for 9pp if finishing the game enchanted Knight 1 2/1/2 that draws a card. Can draw more pretty easily. Basically an Earth sorceress that has 1 less defenders but draws off itself. Ward Haven is already starved for draw, and losing Golden bells will hurt like a bi- Sacred Stone Apostle 1 Enhance for possibly 5/7/6 stats all with ward and most targeting protection isn’t bad, but being able to put a 1/1 ward not only to contest board but also to get more use out of Wilbert and Sarissa is also really useful. Did I mention she is a 1/2/2 outside turn 1? pure metamorphosis 1 2pp transform anything into a 2/1. Remember Presto? That card balances giving a 3/4 that drew your opponent a card on evo by being 2pp. And this one gives a 2/1. Only problem is you can’t get rid of it on your turn. Shady Priest 1 1pp banish anything lmao. Another amulet to get destroyed, 1pp too. And the body isn’t bad either, tutoring an amulet to use with him and being able to possibly banish multiple things in the midgame is a ton of value. Set 1 Amazing card. Accel is amazing for heal decks like Elena or new 4pp amulet, or just for procing Lorena. But the body on this thing is so good. Healing, Targeting protection, high defense, AND Bane?! Amazing. And then you remember that you can res this thing with Sarissa for massive tempo swings. Portal Class Rating: 2 Portal has some good cards, but lack a cohesive game plan outside float, which lacks synergy with the legends. mechanical designs 1 Draw engine for float. With all the combos of very chap cards which don’t self replace, resources run out fast, so an extra card a turn could really help. Wretch 2 What carries this to 2 is him being good going first, and him making a bullet bike to enable Zel to a 1 for 1. Otherwise, meh Stringmaster 1 Amazing puppet support, cheap puppet generator, and generates lots of dead followers. Yo Yo girl 3 Very underwhelming, clunky, and hard to play. Better to just play the artifact than her and why pay 3pp to lower a single pshift by 1, when a 1pp artifacts lowers them all by 1? Scavenge 2 Very interesting card that can gain massive advantage the later the game goes on. Reusing many portal followers is a massive blessing. Kinda expensive and can be clunky though. Railmender Coyote 3 Portal has little to no ride support- not many buffs and no other payoffs for buffs, other than trading with puppets using additional attack. capsule Homunculus 1 0pp heal basically. Just stick it in a float combo. Heal is always welcome in this deck .Face damage doesn’t matter cause your win con is Vesha Zel Neutral Class Rating: 1 Neutral just has a a lot of solid support now. Almost all of them do something to help Ride game plans Spice Showers 3 A gingerbread house that doesnt leave an earth sigil. Need I say more? “Quixotic adventurer” 1 Solid ride support. Not much else to say rivaylian Bandit 1 Ride payoff card. How effective it is at that depends on the deck. Doubt the enhance is good though vagabond Lizard 1 Again, plain old solid ride support supercharged Guitarist 2 Ride payoff card, but it’s trash without them. Have been watching old kannada movies in lockdown as I started to miss going out in the city & here are my reviews or opinions on movies I watched. - part 7
Jedara bale - Noir - 3.5/5 - Available on Youtube Jedara bale is inspired by James bond movies that were all the rage then & is still. Director duo of Dorai-Bhagwan tries to emulate the same in jedara bale with Rajkumar playing the role of a secret agent joined by Narasimha raju. It follows the Secret agent story template to the last detail, with even including a daring stunt scene that involves a chase/fight in an under construction building which felt realistic & serves well to the spy thriller narrative. Story revolves around a kidnapped scientist who is tortured to give up his formula/recipe to mint fake currency notes, with Rajkumar & narasimharaju the secret agent duo on hunt for them. Movie features all the tropes of Secret agent movie with flashy gadgets, femme fatales, an array of bad guys, a dodgy casino & a rich businessman in the middle of all this. What works for this movie is "swag" of Rajkumar who owns his role as secret agent & his charisma seeps through every scene he is in, he is enthralling in his role & as usual carries the movie in its entirety. Supporting cast features Ashwath, Udaykumar, Dinesh, Jayanti etc who all do justice to their role, especially Uday kumar as a Casino owner, who is menacing as well as frustrated & plays a formidable villain to Rajkumar. Another refreshing fact was the use of the city in the movie, most of the movie shows the city as this lively, vibrant creature, which gives a movie an exotic feel which is huge plus instead of usual deserted roads & set pieces that is seen in other movies. Aa karala raatri - Drama - 3.5/5 - Available on Hotstar Aa karala raatri is a debut movie of Anupama gowda & she shines brightly in this. Directed by Dayal padmanabhan, movie has a stage drama feel to it & director's choice of locations are spot on. The run down home, in a desolate valley sets an ominous tone throughout the movie. Movie starts with a strangetraveler played by JK who arrives at this village & decides to spend the night in run down house owned by Muthanna's, played by Rangayana raghu, family. Then the stranger's behavior oscillates from friendly, to preachy, to flashy, to demanding all the while which results in conflicts with Anupama gowda, who plays Muthanna's daughter. Anupama gowda plays a difficult role as a jaded bitter woman who has lived devoid of any hope of companionship & her raging chemistry with JK sizzles through the screen. From delivering her lines which borders on crass & detailed with conviction to portraying mannerisms of her dangerous mindset, she over-shines veterans like Rangayana raghu & Veena sundar, who plays the role of her mom. JK seems to be the weak point of the movie as he fails to be a sort of an enigma into his character & instead plays it as one-dimensional character & his lines/dialogues just service the story without altering the tone of his character which would have made the final conclusion that much shocking. However, the story is the king here with a dark fairy tale undertones, adapted from a russian story & Anupama gowda's brilliant acting not only saves this movie from being just another artistic misfire & instead makes it an experience to relish. Hope to see more of Anupama gowda & such novel efforts. Gayatri madhuve - Comedy - 1.5/5 - Available on Youtube Anant nag plays a double role in this comedy movie which revolves around the marriage of titular Gayatri, played by Ambika, who plays a pretty face & nothing else. Anant nag plays a dual role of an innocent nerdy rich man looking for a bride & a poor seasoned street smart mechanic. Movie starts with three bachelors who are in love with Gayatri, who is unaware of their existence. The start was the enjoyable part of this movie as seeing these bachelors compete with each other & then the nerdy Anant nag promised a shenanigans filled comedy movie. But once this part of story is dealt with the movie meanders aimlessly & starts being a chore to watch & every scene sucks the fun out of the movie. A bumbling anant nag is used as a poor excuse for comedy & Tiger prabhakar is used for action segments, with Vajramuni wasted in his role as a cunning driver who plots to switch rich Anant nag with poor Anant nag in Gayatri's marriage for monetary benefits. Only saving grace is the first 15 mins or so & then Dinesh chewing the scenes with authority. Movie has songs which has a nostalgic value with catchy lyrics, so if you are a fan on old romantic kannada songs, you can listen to couple of bangers here. Overall movie is forgettable & I am glad it had a short run-time. Ibbara hendira muddina police - Comedy - 5/5 - Available on Youtube A comedy classic from early 90s, a fun filled story made in all Tamil, kannada & telugu by Relangi Narasimha Rao who hits jackpot with this perfect family entertainer. Shashikumar plays the dual role here one of a cop married to Tara & Nirosha, Another an unemployed youth looking for a stable job. I haven't seen the Tamil & telugu version but Shashikumar knocks it out of the park here & I cant imagine any other actor in his place. This movie doesn't have a wasted minute or a character. Tara & Nirosha, as quarreling wives of Shashi kumar are so believable in their animosity for each other watching them console each other at the second half was a comedy gut punch. Umashree & Mysore lokesh as cattle farming couples capture the hearts in their iconic roles, the ease with which they assimilate into the story & get involved in the mistaken identity shenaningans is a laugh riot. Mukhyamantri chandru & Rekha das with their "Pada pooja" ritual gag is a guaranteed laugh, the Gag never ages & gets a laugh everytime its presented. Seeing Mukyamantri chandru nailing the comic timing with simple & natural mannerisms contrasts how Rangayana raghu does it with over the top acting & shows how rare a talent like Mukyamantri chandru is. Overall a perfect family entertainer where every scene, dialogues, gags are iconic. The Jokes range from adult to childish & gives something for everyone to enjoy. The supporting cast of Mukhyamantri chandru, Umashree, Mysore lokesh rivals Golmaal rashakrishna & this is a shining example of Shashikumar's Golden era in the 90s, a versatile, charismatic actor. Watch this for a Guaranteed entertainment for the whole family & its just so good even songs had me grinning ear to ear while rest of the movie had me laughing out loud. One way to describe will be to call it Police story for adults. K V Raju the director takes a lion's share of credit for this movie, his fresh direction, ripe with symbolism & metaphors in every single scene keeps you glued to the screen. The movie starts of as a hardboiled thriller as stylish as any of the John woo films. Movie sacrifices a gritty feel to a stylish narrative. Starring Ambarish as an honest daredevil Inspector Indrajith, who blazes the screen with masculinity, churning out the complex dialogues with authority tearing through the story. Every line uttered by Amabrish gives you goosebumps, its not crass lines aiming for masses but a conditioned well thought lines that wouldn't feel out of place in a literary play. Dialogues are extremely well crafted & will need multiple re-watches to enjoy it. Ambarish embraces the angry rebel personality that got him his fame & one can see why he is so revered as Rebel star, he is fully committed to his role & is able to match the herculean efforts put forth by K V Raju.
