In economics, there is no Hippocratic oath: First, do no harm. If there were, world leaders would be in serious violation of it. With the noble purpose of saving lives, they are deliberately throttling the global economy. The plan is to put economic activity in a state of suspended animation for weeks or months, get past the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic, and then resuscitate the patient. Necessary? Probably. Dangerous? Undoubtedly.
Because this has never been done before at this scale, there are no white-haired elders to guide us. We are going to have to invent the plan as we go, recalibrating as facts emerge. Just as overwhelmed doctors must choose which patients to save and which to let go, we will need to decide which sectors, which companies, and which workers are most in need of and most deserving of a rescue.
And eventually we’ll need to make agonizing trade-offs between saving lives and saving livings. The more people are saved from the coronavirus through draconian shutdowns, the more livelihoods will be broken, in some cases irreparably. President Trump said on March 24 that he would like the U.S. economy “opened up and just raring to go by Easter,” which is April 12. However, the more we ease up on quarantines and social distancing to allow the economy to breathe, the more patients will have their breath stolen by this frightening lung disease. Martin Eichenbaum of Northwestern University and others calculate in a new working paper that the U.S. could save 500,000 lives through serious containment measures vs. the base case of doing nothing—but at the cost of knocking 10% off economic output in 2020. No doubt, it’s going to be ugly.
Here is one principle for policymakers to consider as they make decisions on our behalf: If you must do harm to the economy, please make it reversible. Hurt, but don’t kill. Bend it, but do not break it.
The sudden stop could cause hundreds of thousands of small and medium-size enterprises to go out of business—to break. Some will quickly reemerge, which is fine. But in many cases the loss will be permanent. High-functioning teams that have taken years to assemble will break up. Synergies will be lost. Workers who thrived in a particular niche will flounder, seeking jobs from new employers who don’t understand who they are or what they can do.
“Much of the information in our society is embedded within corporations. The bankruptcy of an enterprise leads to the loss of organizational and informational capital—a negative shock to the economy,” the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said in 2014 in a meeting of the International Economic Association by the Dead Sea in Jordan, where he gave the presidential address.
The answer, of course: Keep companies intact as much as possible. Restarting the economy after Covid-19 recedes will be easier if the enterprises that make and sell things are ready to go. It’s also a kindness: “Losing a business to failure—especially one that has been built up over time—is a devastating blow to the owners and their families, who are often involved,” economist David Levy, himself the chairman of a family business, the Jerome Levy Forecasting Center in Mount Kisco, N.Y., writes in an email. “Dreams destroyed, fortunes destroyed, lives destroyed.”
So what are we to do? Well, one elegant way to keep companies afloat is Germany’s Kurzarbeit, or short work time, in which the government subsidizes the salaries of workers who would otherwise be laid off. Kurzarbeit helped Germany snap back from the financial crisis faster than any other European country, says Markus Brunnermeier, a German-born economist at Princeton. Several Scandinavian countries have followed Germany’s lead, and the United Kingdom announced a similar program on March 20.
An alternative is to lend money to businesses freely and cheaply until the crisis passes. The Federal Reserve is all over that when it comes to big companies, financing their commercial paper and announcing on March 23 that it will even buy corporate bonds directly—a major departure for the central bank. (“Wow, just wow,” George Rusnak, co-head of fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said on Bloomberg Television.)
Getting help to smaller companies, which rely on banks rather than the markets to raise money, is a tougher problem. The $2 trillion bill that was nearing congressional approval on March 25 includes $350 billion for lending to businesses through banks involved with the Small Business Administration. Another idea, from Brunnermeier, is for the Fed to charge banks a negative interest rate—that is, pay them, via the discount window—for rolling over their loans to small and medium enterprises.
In an ordinary recession, encouraging banks to “evergreen” their loans—give new money to debtors so they can pay interest on their old loans—would be considered malpractice. It would be viewed as wasting precious capital on propping up zombies instead of directing it to new, job-creating investment. But this is not an ordinary recession. The companies that need help are not zombies. Keeping them afloat is not sinful but essential. “It’s a 180-degree change in mindset,” Brunnermeier says.
Stiglitz, the Nobel laureate, who teaches at Columbia, advocates a “super Chapter 11” that would avert mass insolvency. In a 2010 paper, he and the University of Warwick’s Marcus Miller wrote that the bankruptcy code “is essentially designed for idiosyncratic events in which assets may be disposed of at going market prices,” which is emphatically not the case in a crisis in which no one wants to catch a falling knife. Under a super Chapter 11, they wrote, a government-sponsored institution “would consolidate the troubled businesses and decide simultaneously—and this is the key—how all of them would be resolved in a common procedure.” That procedure could involve, for example, swapping debt for shares across the board.
Deborah Lucas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has spent most of her career studying the federal government as a financial institution. She was chief economist of the Congressional Budget Office and now directs the Golub Center for Finance and Policy at the MIT Sloan School of Management. “You don’t want to blow up viable, going concerns, and that’s the biggest risk in the current situation,” she says. “It’s worth paying a lot to avoid that.”
Companies should not get direct aid such as grants, she says, because any company will take cash that’s offered, even if the managers know their situation is unsustainable. Loans work better—managers won’t usually take a loan they don’t expect to pay back, because a default could land them in bankruptcy court. Based on her experience in the financial crisis, Lucas says it’s a mistake to put conditions on loans, such as requiring that employers retain workers. Many managers would rather pass up the money than tie their hands, she predicts.
Bailouts aren’t popular. When I touched on this theme in an earlier article, I got reactions on Twitter such as, “A morally bankrupt money grab for the investor class.” The Left wants help for workers, not capitalists. And there’s a segment of the libertarian Right, including many economists, that says the free market does a fine job of redeploying resources—workers, machines, patents, trademarks, etc.—to their highest and best use when a company fails. In the financial crisis, “instead of bailing out banks, U.S. policymakers should have allowed the standard process of bankruptcy to operate,” Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron wrote in the libertarian Cato Journal in 2009.
So, yes, individuals need help, too. Beefing up unemployment benefits and extending their duration is a no-brainer. Forbearance on debt repayment also makes sense. It’s not only companies, after all, but households that should be kept from breaking. Meanwhile, the process of rescuing companies can go horribly astray. Ben Hunt, co-founder and chief investment officer of Second Foundation Partners, calculates that stock buybacks by the four biggest airlines exceeded their free cash flow from 2014 through 2019—enriching executives and shareholders but leaving the companies unprepared for a crisis. “The raccoons and high-functioning sociopaths are out in force on this, looking to get their private losses socialized and their private gains locked in,” Hunt wrote on March 19 on his website, Epsilon Theory.
It’s reasonable to impose conditions on the aid companies get, as the new bill does. Hunt would put tight caps on executive compensation; fire and replace board chairs; require the companies to raise money by selling shares, even at today’s unfavorable prices; and prohibit buybacks and dividends until the government loans are repaid. Taking part ownership in companies in return for emergency aid—as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has discretion to demand—would give taxpayers some of the upside, at the cost of edging the U.S. a tad closer to Bernie Sanders-style socialism. It’s also reasonable to pick and choose which industries to rescue. Airlines may be vital infrastructure, but casinos and cruise lines are not.
In keeping with the philosophy of bend-don’t-break, aid should be concentrated on the most breakable kinds of companies, which tend to be ones that are light on physical assets. Once the employees of asset-light companies disperse, there is little or no value left. Small businesses, which employ almost half of the U.S. workforce, are more likely than big ones to be asset-light. Companies with valuable physical assets can bounce back relatively easily. The failure of a shale-oil producer does no harm to the hydrocarbons still in the ground. Cruise lines still have their ships, airlines have their jets, and casinos still have their glitzy gambling halls, which can quickly resume operation once the virus all-clear sounds.
Politics should play as little role as possible in bailout decisions. Easy to say, hard to enforce. In 2008-09, when the Bush and Obama administrations were trying to rescue General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, “we worked to fend off attempts by stakeholders on all sides of the issue to meddle in granular decisions over which dealerships to close or which plants to shut down,” Brian Deese, Steven Shafran, and Dan Jester, who concocted the plans, wrote in a chapter of First Responders, a new book written and edited by financial crisis insiders. The lobbyists are once again out in force, representing everyone from pig farmers to theater owners to exercise-clothing manufacturers. The Trump administration agreed to independent oversight of a fund to support companies.
Bailouts of companies and aid to individuals will be fantastically expensive. There’s a good chance that the stimulus plan that was under negotiation on Capitol Hill on March 24 will have to be followed by more. But that’s because the need has never been greater. Think of the government-ordered shutdown of the economy as a heart attack—or to use a more timely metaphor, severe acute respiratory syndrome. Treatment must be aggressive to succeed. Halfway measures and economizing don’t cut it.
Whatever is done needs to be done soon. Layoffs have already begun. The more damage businesses suffer, the harder it will be for them to bounce back. As Trump’s March 24 statement goes to show, the political pressure to resume normal economic activity is beginning to intensify. The surest way to maintain support for the restrictions that protect the public from Covid-19 is to alleviate the damage that those restrictions do to the economy.
(Updates throughout with details of stimulus bill.)

Aquino voted to deny the petition to disqualify Poe as senator in 2015 along with the other senators (Cayetano, Villar, Sotto, and Legarda).

Stand on Key Legislative Agenda:

From Duterte's First SONA Stand

Decriminalizing Libel In Favor. Filed SBN 2158 left pending in the committee in the 16th Congress and SBN 680 (pending in the committee) in the 17th Congress.
(If there are other key issues I forgot to add, do let me know.)

Issues and Controversies:

  • Apart from his surname and inexperience, his stint in the NYC under PGMA was used against him in his senatorial campaign.
  • In 2013 after the PDAF scam surfaced, he is one of the 14 senators who deleted their PDAF allocations in the 2014 budget.
  • Co-author of a bill that aimed to create an independent fact-finding body to investigate the Mamasapano tragedy.
  • During the 2016 VP race, his name was caught in the middle when Marcos claimed he was the only candidate that wrote an anti-dynasty provision. Robredo's camp disagreed gave credit to Sen. Aquino. Aquino clarified that it was Sen. Ejercito who wrote the provision and they supported it.
  • One of the senators who were caught unaware when the bicameral conference committee cut the budget for the implementation of RH Law.
  • In February 2017 after the arrest of Sen. De Lima and some LP senators attended the EDSA Revolution anniversary clad in black, Sen. Pacquiao motioned for them to be stripped of their committee chairmanships. The ousted senators joined the minority bloc.
  • His staff's email were hacked and used to connect him to a destabilization plot along with Sen. Pangilinan and Sen. Hontiveros.
  • In 2018, NYC cut ties with foundation linked with his office and replaced Ten Outstanding Youth Organization of the Philippines with The President Rodrigo Roa Duterte Youth Leadership Awards.
  • Since the Duterte administration, he is often a target of fake quotes and news; sometimes it even comes from cabinet officials. His statements were also taken out of context or misinterpreted to create controversy. One of his bills, Zero Food Waste Act, was misrepresented by pro-Duterte bloggers as 'pagpag bill'.
  • He was also accused of credit-grabbing by pro-Duterte supporters.
(If there are other controversies I forgot to add, do let me know.)
Thanks for reading! Any mistake is mine. Feel free to point it out as well as any improvement that can be made. :)

[Event] Algerida 2035: National Renewal Megaproject

Algerida 2035: National Renewal Megaproject

President Sa'adi has announced a new megaproject to couple with the national housing overhaul that will change Algiers forever. President Sa'adi has proposed the creation of a megalopolis to expand from Algiers, Oran, and Tiaret. The new megalopolis, slated to be called Algerida, is the proposed capital of the Islamic Republic of Al-Maghreb, and to be the most modern city in the Middle East when completed. The project will be massive and cost around $100 Bn, to be built in 10 years. However, for Algeria's future, there is no cost to great to launch us into the next era. President Sa'adi envisions a city with world-class universities, casinos, a vibrant trade port, a booming financial center, high-class tourists, and factories outside of the city limits-churning Algeria forward. Without a doubt, in recent years, Algeria has made leaps and bounds towards a brighter future, but this will be the crowning achievement for all of Algeria's time. It is one thing to claim to be the utopia for Muslims, it is another to actually give it to them.

Algerida's Residential Development

Already announced but under a different name, Algerida's massive apartment residential complex developments are already underway. This urban renewal process will begin replacing the old with the new to completely change the Algerian lifestyle. With the street side stores that are built into the residential blocks, while also featuring underground parking garages, downtown life will be more vibrant than ever before. Citizens will now be able to purchase services, food, and small items through small privately owned businesses within the first two floors of the residential developments on the street side. The previously mentioned underground parking will clean the Algerian streets of vehicle, trash and pollution clutter. With the Algerian National Police strictly enforcing the urban ban on roadside parking, it should fix the problem for good, and trafficking will be smoother sailing rolling forward. These new residential developments will have access to natural gas, 5G services from nearby towers, 10 gigabyte internet speeds, running water, and air-conditioning as a utility. For many Algerians, this is luxury they have never had before. Each apartment building we be on average 25 stories tall and be built in districts of like models, all will feature both stairs and at least two elevators. The roof tops of the apartment building developments will be fashioned with solar panels and connecting to the Algerida grid through transformers to store and use the energy gradually through the day time, and open up the reserves at night time- living in the desert does have its perks. Additionally, power from the tiered-hydro dams as part of the desalination river project will be the primary contributor to the new grid. To combat pollution and dust, Algeria will be working with contractors from China to build air purifier towers in the center of each apartment residential district to clean the air out for the local residents. Needless to say, each residential district will have its own Elementary School, Middle School, and High-School all within close proximity to the air purifier towers within the residential district. Algerian National Police will have at least two precincts to each residential district to ensure proper community policing and compliance with traffic laws. The local roads will also have to be upgraded to connect the proposed regions of Algerida together. Most main roads in the residential districts will be 8 lanes wide featuring signs in both Arabic and French. The main roads will have traffic lights, but at the midpoint between each traffic light on major roadways, sky walkways will be built over the road for pedestrians to traverse peacefully across the roads. The sky walkways will use ramps on the side with small stairs in the middle to cater to disabled citizens. In addition to the traffic lights, a small shaded concrete pedestal will be erected for Algerian National Police Traffic Enforcement Officers who will guide traffic on a permanent basis with their arms and whistle. Additional officers will be necessary to assist in school-crossings Monday through Saturday. The walled communities will have a security checkpoint at both ends to be accessed both by on foot and by vehicle, where in between all the apartments in the district is a small communal park. The security checkpoint will be required to log in visitors and have the resident who invited them come down to escort them to the residence. Only keys and parking passes will be given to residents, however visitor vehicles that are not electric scooters or bicycles/skateboards can purchase a $20 parking ticket to allow them to use the underground parking garages. The security checkpoints will be managed by the Ministry of Public Safety. Vehicle license plates and pictures of the driver will be taken when vehicles come and go that are not resident vehicles, otherwise, resident vehicles will already have their vehicle logged in with the public security officers at the residential check point. There is no specific metal detector or shake-down security at the entrances, just scanning the gate access with a residential card, the card will show the Ministry of Public Safety officers a picture on their screen that they will visually match with the face. The card will open the gate regardless. Public Safety officers will patrol the apartment district both during the night and day time to assist residents and ensure the area is secure. All mail will be delivered to an apartment district mail sorting house that all the residents can visit to collect their mail, near the entrances to the districts. The mail boxes are free of charge, and come with living in the districts. International shipping will cost, domestic shipping is paid for. Each residential district will have one major hospital, while each apartment block will have a small clinic with maybe one doctor and five nurses on staff for a range of services. All dentistry, and specialized services are done at the hospital. Private businesses can rent out the rooms on the first floor to open up street side businesses, making small thrive-able communities within the city. CCTV cameras will be placed around the inside of the Apartment block and serve as a way to assist the Public Safety officers in their patrols.

Algerida's Air Markets

Air Markets at one point in time was a crucial part of Algerian culture, and that has not passed away with history for many. President Sa'adi sees no reason why the new megalopolis cannot have these air markets, however he acknowledges they are usually quite dirty, and give a bad image on a clean and prosperous city. Nonetheless, there is a happy medium that can be met in order to keep the city efficient, and the streets clean. Algerida will allocate large plots of land on roadsides where the open air markets can be organized so they are not directly on the street side. The stall owners can apply for a permit at no charge to set up their stall and request at which air market they wish to operate, and they will be given a set space to keep their stall and set up permanently. This way, Algerians and tourists alike can visit these open air markets and enjoy them as a crucial piece of Algerian history, while not detracting from the efficiency of the city. The air markets are largely unregulated, and mostly un-policed, with the exception of annual food inspections, and the occasional narcotics sweeps. Officers will still be accessed to make the occasional patrol through the market and break up fights and ensure there is no gang-affiliated operations, but will not interfere with the private business functions or their products.

Algiers Financial District as part of Algerida

Recently, the Algerian State Construction Engineering Corporation has begun constructing their new headquarters, called ASCEC Tower just south of Rue Tripoli in Algiers- in the new Algiers Financial District. Rue Tripoli in Algiers as part of Algerida will become the new financial district. Large state-owned companies like Air Maghreb, NaseebChat, and many other electronic and corporate manufacturing giants have begun setting up their own headquarters on Rue Tripoli, overlooking the Mediterranean. When it is complete, Rue Tripoli Street will become the postcard image of the new Algeria. A bright night sky filled with colors of bright LED lights. Soon Air Maghreb Tower, Algeria State Broadcasting Tower, and NaseebChat Corporation Headquarters will tower above Algerida and show of the many homegrown successes of Algeria's own corporations. By day they will flex power, money, innovation, and creativity, and by night- they will light up the sky. Other companies such as AliTel, Halim Group, Kazim Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and many others will also be setting up their own headquarters on Rue Tripoli.

The Mighty Universities of Algerida

Now holding some of the most influential universities in Algeria such as: University of Algiers, and Oran University, Algerida will hold a lot of sway over the dreams of Algerian students. However, if Algerida really wants to compete on the world-stage, it will have to attract talent from all over the world, and build new universities with new programs to stimulate the minds. It would also mean, Algeria would need to create some new universities to be apart of "Allah League," a play on Ivy League to describe prestigious American universities. The "Allah League" in Algeria will consist of the new constructed schools:
Other universities from around the world are being encouraged to apply to build an extended university campus in Algerida before there is no longer any space. To jump start these “Allah’s League” universities, it will take a considerable amount of money because the school must be built, faculty must be hired, contracts need to be signed. However, for our young people, there is no expense too many. Algerians should have some of the best faculty and researchers from around the globe, and there is no place better to look than the rapidly developing China. China is cranking out teachers and professors faster than it knows what to do with them- and Algeria says- we will help you if you help us. The Algerian Ministry of Education has reached out to the Chinese Ministry of Education and delivered them a stack of contracts for temporary senior faculty positions to build an Ivy League from the ground up. Of course, these contracts will last while students learn and become professionals until they can eventually become professors themselves and truly embody a homegrown Ivy League, for the academic elite- but until then, we will learn from our best friend. The Sa’adi Military University will specialize in creating 2nd Lt. officers out of high-school for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, to become the best of the best for the Algerian Armed Forces, to comprise of PLA visiting leadership. The National Algerida University will be the all purpose university with a focus on international relations, political science, humanities, foreign languages, education, fine arts and music, Sunni theology, urban planning, things of that nature. The National Algerida University will have a mix of both local and Chinese professors. The Zekkal University of Science and Technology will be the STEM school, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, software development, electronics manufacturing development, maritime and nautical engineering studies, aviation sciences, cyber security, biology, chemistry, environmental policy, environmental engineering, sustainability studies. The Fergani University is the Algerian Law School, and school for law enforcement. Zekkal University will likely need a large amount of foreign faculty to begin. Police, prospective attorneys, intelligence services, prospective students in international laws would all seek out Fergani University. Fergani University can be comprised of domestic educators. The Hamina University of Business will be the official business school of Algeria teaching things like finance, accounting, human resources, business administration, industrial management, industrial programming, business law, petroleum business, aviation business, electronics and synthetic manufacturing. The Hamina University of Business will seek field experts from all over the world.

Algerida Industrial Sector

Algerida’s industrial sector will be built south of Chlef to Tiaret. Current manufacturing giants in Algeria will be expanding their operations exponentially in the area to create thousands of job opportunities moving into the future. Additionally, Algeria is going to push the manufacturing of simple goods to couple the growing field of complex manufacturing. The sectors Algeria will push during the creation of the massive Algerida Industrial sector will be textiles, furniture, foodstuffs, building materials, semiconductors, and desalination equipment. Algeria is currently undergoing a massive economic transition as it aims to push all petroleum exports well below 50% by 2030 in an effort to diversify the economy, and the Algerida Industrial Sector will be one of the major draws for Algerians and other arabs to Algerida to work, as it will be the largest collection of factories and manufacturing facilities in Northern Africa- a key branching point to nations in the EU and Asia. The Algerida Industrial Sector will have very low business tax, with wide 8 lane roads to allow for ease of logistical transportation.

Port of Oran Upgrades

Mers El Kebir Heavy Industries Co, Ltd, the major shipbuilder and subworks that was built at Port Oran have been the latest addition to the port authority, however Port Oran needs to be significantly expanded to be able to service high-capacity exporting. The goal for the Port of Oran is to handle 30.05 million TEUs annually, setting Port Oran below Shanghai and Singapore’s capacity, but just ahead of Shenzhen. The port will need to expand exponentially to support the following: 50 berths for vessels with 10,000 tonnes deadweight and above, 23 non production berths, 18 passenger ferry berths, 9 consignee berths, and 20 container berths. Additionally, Quay Crane length will have to be 15,500 meters. It will consist of 727 hectares in area, and 180,000 square meters of warehouse facilities. The port upgrades itself, will cost $7 Bn out of the total $100 Bn to be spent on the project.

The Golden Desert Casino and Entertainment District

The Golden Desert Casino and Entertainment District is the proposed tourist hotspot to be right near the beach at Zeralda. Several high-class resorts, casinos, nightclubs and restaurants will be constructed near the prime beachfront property to make Algerida a tourist destination for summer and spring breaking Europeans, and “big spenders.” The following casino resorts will be constructed:
The casinos will be run and managed by the Algerian Ministry of Tourism, the Golden Desert Casino and Entertainment District is the only place in Algeria where consumption of alcohol and prostitution is completely legal. The Ministry of Finance plans on making the Golden Desert Casino and Entertainment District the official “cash cow of Algeria” as the Las Vegas of the Muslim World. Arabs have money, why not gamble it?

Algerida Transportation

Algerida will need an extensively developed transportation system to service the new capital area. Algerida plans to implement a metro system to include subway and buses. Additionally, Algerida will be implementing high speed rail and cargo rails for end-to-end city travel. The Algerida metro will at the beginning primarily service Oran, Tiaret, and Algiers respectively and be built closer and closer to linking each other together in Chlef as the need for new residential developments expands into the area. Metro trains will be purchased from China, the latest model of trains being used on the Beijing Metro. The entire metro service (bus and subways) will use the “Sa’adi Card,” an all access card. The card can be loaded up at subway stations and will be swiped when getting on the subway through turnstiles and at the bus door, and swiped when getting off or exiting turnstiles. The Algerida Highspeed Rail will be utilized through purchased Chinese CRH2 trains that run at 380 km/hr. Several stations for high speed rail and cargo trains will be constructed at large population centers along the lines. It will take approximately an hour to travel from Oran to Algiers. The trains will stop for 5 minutes at stops between the line start and line end. Subway trains will arrive every 5 minutes. There will be a simple metal detector and bag scan at both the high speed rail stations and metro stations manned by Public Safety officers.

Nadir Sa’adi International Airport (IATA Code: NSA)

One of the most important additions to the city will be the Nadir Sa’adi International Airport, that will serve as the larger of two airports for this major city. The Nadir Sa’adi International Airport will house four terminals and two runways of 12,802 ft of grooved asphalt. The entrance to the airport will be at the center between four extending arms of departure gates, the cars will pass under a tunnel which the planes will cross above to transition around the airport and the cars will move in a circular fashion by moving counter-clockwise before exiting the opposite side. Nadir Sa’adi Intl. Airport will primarily serve as an international transition hub between the Americas and Africa, the Americas and Asia, Europe and Africa, and any branching point from Asia or Africa. When completed, the airport will be utilized by over 80 airlines, 185+ destinations, and over 84 countries. The airport will serve as the primary hub and base for Air Maghreb.

Presidential Palace and Fanfare

The Sa’adi Presidential Palace will be constructed in Tenes, pretty much directly between Algiers and Oran. It will be constructed to be one of the finest recreations of old Sultan-era architecture, and will cost $490 Mn to built. The grounds will feature the largest mosque in Algeria for the Algerian Government, a military barracks, firing range, a large outdoor infinity pool, a presidential gardens, a 85 meter tall statue of President Nadir Sa’adi, a 300 car garage, horse stables, Presidential House, Guest House, Presidential Bunker, a helicopter pad, private airfield, and much more. The property itself, considered one of the most choice places in Algeria to build property, has a view overlooking the Mediterannean. On Rue Tripoli Street, the Algerian Congress building will be constructed with the largest flagpole in the country just on the opposite side of the road, overlooking the Mediterannean. Behind the flag, a 85 meter tall statue in bronze of President Nadir Sa’adi will be erected. The road will be 12 lanes in total after expansion, and continue uninterrupted for a mile before a 400 meter obelisk called the “Monument to the Maghrabians” splits Rue Tripoli as a roundabout, connecting in many different directions to be the most signature route in the whole city. Where the Algerian Congress sits is called “Al Merkets Square” where the nation will hold its military parades, when complete. The Algerian Congress building will have a viewing platform where citizens can look out at the city when there is not a military parade, but will be a viewing platform for the Algerian government when completed. The Algerian Congress will be on the south side of the Rue Tripoli, with the National Flagpole just north on the opposite side of Rue Tripoli, further north behind the flag will be the bronze statue of President Nadir Sa’adi and one mile down Rue Tripoli to the west, the “Monument to the Maghrabians” could be seen splitting the road. On the edge of the financial district, the buildings would likely be covered in flags in banner form in the event of a military parade.

Example lang... Eleksyon 2019 Candidate Profile: Nancy Binay (Re-electionist)

Disclaimer: I am not in anyway connected (or plans to be connected) with Sen. Binay's campaign. This was my attempt at building a profile that can be useful for the upcoming senatorial elections.
Since re-electionists will most likely win and with the idea that the bills and resolutions they filed, supported, sponsored, voted foagainst/abstain would speak more clearly on who they are (and who they will be) as a lawmaker than campaign promises and platforms, I picked one and researched their previous legislative work. Binay was the second re-electionist to file her COC. I decided not to go for Pimentel because he could be disqualified. And to be frank, out of the 6 re-electionists, I reckon she was the least pabibo so it will be a more manageable task.
The information included here are based on what I believe are the important things I should look into as I consider a candidate with past legislative experience. Feel free to suggest other points of consideration.

Stand on Key Legislative Agenda:

Other Key Issues Stand
Anti-Dynasty Bill Voted yes on the committee report for SBN 1765 which is currently pending 2nd reading. But in 2014, she vocally opposed the bill when Aquino promised to sign any anti-dynasty bill that passes in the Congress.
Divorce Against
Abortion Against. She is also against RH Law.
Medical Marijuana No info available. When the Lower House committee approved of the bill, Sotto said a similar bill would have no hope in the Senate.
Death Penalty Against
Lowering the minimum age of criminal liability Against
Jeepney Modernization No info available.
Endo Voted yes on the committee report for SBN 1826 which is currently pending 2nd reading. She was one of the senators who vocally urged the government to regularize their contractual workers employed for decades.
Same-sex Marriage Against
SOGIE Bill Voted yes on the committee report for SBN 1271 which is currently pending 2nd reading.
SSS pension hike She filed SBN 181 (pension and other benefits hike) which was later consolidated with SBN 1753 that is currently passed by both Houses.
Salary Standardization Voted for the SSL 4 of the 16th Congress but it was left pending in the bicam committee. In the 17th Congress, voted yes for SBN 1577 (like SSL 4, wage increase for military) which is currently pending 2nd reading. She also filed SBN 2034 (increase of public school teacher's monthly salary) which is pending in the committee.
Amending the political party system, Anti-Turncoatism Position unclear. She said it's not an issue for her since she's loyal to UNA.
Decriminalizing Libel In a senate hearing in 2014, she shared Pimentel's view that decriminalizing libel might lead to more media killings. All bills filed in the 17th congress are pending in the committees.
(If there are other key issues I forgot to add, do let me know.)

Controversies:

  • Her qualifications when she decided to run for senator as the 12th candidate of the UNA ticket after Joey De Venecia backed out.
  • She didn't participate in any debate during her senatorial campaign.
  • During the Blue Ribbon committee hearing on the Makati City Hall II parking building, Bondal and Mercado accused that she, with other members of her family, "amassed kickbacks from the construction of the controversial carpark building." Particularly, Mercado alleged she was involved in the "Makati City government's project of free birthday cakes to its senior citizens."
  • On Hacienda Binay, she said: "How I wish we have a hacienda like that but it really isn’t ours."
  • She was with her brother, then Makati mayor Junjun Binay, at the time of the incident involving security guards in Dasmariñas village.
  • After the Ombudsman announced the suspension of her brother, ex-Makati mayor Junjun Binay, she accused "the Aquino administration of using the Office of the Ombudsman to discredit Vice President Binay and members of his family as the 2016 presidential elections draws near."
  • After Trillianes accused her (and her sister) for misusing their PDAF allocations, she hits back by denying she ever received PDAF and challenging Trillianes to explain his DAP allocation.
  • She received the most attention during the senate probe on DAP. Her grilling of Aquino's cabinet members received mixed reactions, some people praised her while others called out her hypocrisy (she called for Sec. Abad to attend the hearings while her dad snub the Makati City hall probe).
  • Voted for Sen. De Lima's ouster when Sen. Pacquiao motioned for the Blue Ribbon committee chairmanship be vacated.
  • Signed the adopted resolution (SRN 388) in support of the Declaration of martial law in Mindanao. She was absent during the joint session vote for the first extension. Voted for second extension of martial law in Mindanao.
  • Didn't sign the resolution (SRN 738), along with 9 other majority bloc senators, urging the Supreme Court to review CJ Sereno ouster.
(If there are other controversies I forgot to add, do let me know.)
Thanks for reading! Any mistake is mine. Feel free to point it out as well as any improvement that can be made. :)
Notes: [1] Archived Committee Membership for the 16th Congress isn't available at senate.gov.ph. Retrieved from wikipedia edit history. [2] SBN = Senate Bill Number. SRN = Senate Resolution Number [3] Search results filter: Author (Binay) + Legislative status (Consolidated with Approved Bill) [4] Only resolutions where Binay is the lone author excluding congratulatory, commemoratory, or condolatory resolutions. For brevity, not all requests for inquries are included. [5] Definition of terms:
  • Principal Author whoever filed the bill first in case of multiple bills on the subject.
  • Principal Sponsor introduces the bill to the senate floor, expresses the contents and purposes of the bill to open the debate.
  • Author via Committee Report, author (or one of the authors) of the approved committee report.
  • Co-author, filed a similar bill that was substituted or consolidated by the committee report. Senators can also request to be made coauthor. Committee members who signed the committee report can be listed as co-authors.
  • Co-sponsor supports the bill and helps demostrate the bill's popularity and improve its chances for passage.

Other Notes:
  • I didn't include educational attainment because it's not a requirement under current laws. And I personally don't agree that there should be one. Nor do I believe that it should be an important criteria for a voter. A higher education doesn't necessarily equate to competency, integrity, or political willingness. Nor can we categorically prove previous lawmakers with higher education are more competent, have more integrity and political will than less educated lawmakers; simply because the barriers to entry for good-intentioned nobodies are so high (machinery and money), only a certain kind of less educated candidates (celebrities) have won nationally. Politicians, especially from families who have made politics their careers, can buy diplomas to help their image.
  • Because of the limitations of the search feature in senate.gov.ph, only bills they authored and sponsored are included. Bills they sponsored but didn't author are not included here.

Part 2: A Timeline of Epstein, Trump, Sex Trafficking, and the Intelligence Community

I don't think John DeCamp gets everything right, especially his claims about satanic groups, but in 1988 we learn about the Franklin Coverup, which Wikipedia describes as:
"The Franklin child prostitution ring allegations began in June 1988 in Omaha, Nebraska and attracted significant public and political interest until late 1990, when separate state and federal grand juries concluded that the allegations were unfounded and the ring was a "carefully crafted hoax."[1][2].
From the NYT:
(12/18/88) A Lurid, Mysterious Scandal Begins Taking Shape in Omaha
In the Executive Board's public session Monday, Mr. Chambers said the activities of Lawrence E. King Jr., the credit union's manager for the last 18 years and the central figure in its collapse, were ''just the tip of an iceberg, and he's not in it by himself.'' But Mr. Chambers added nothing that would shed light on his cryptic assertion....Mr. King is a 44-year-old Omaha resident who wholly or partly owns several small businesses here and lives with his wife and school-age son in a large house in one of the city's better neighborhoods. He is a tall, expansive figure well known for his costly style of dressing, lavish celebrations and extensive travel, sometimes in chartered jets and often with an entourage of young men.In 1972 he headed a national political organization, Black Democrats for George McGovern. But he gained greater prominence after he had switched parties a while later, serving for a time as vice chairman of the National Black Republican Council, an official affiliate of the Republican Party, and becoming a familiar figure on the Republican social scene.Mr. King has maintained a $5,000-a-month residence off Embassy Row in Washington and has also entertained generously at Republican National Conventions. At the 1984 gathering, in Dallas, where he sang the national anthem on the convention floor, he rented the ranch where the television series ''Dallas'' is filmed and organized a party there for black Republicans....Mr. King's trouble with the authorities came to the surface early last month when officials of the Government's National Credit Union Administration, acting on information from the F.B.I. and the Internal Revenue Service, arrived at the offices of the Franklin Community Federal Credit Union and shut it down. Then, on Nov. 14, the agency, which oversees the nation's federally chartered credit unions and insures their deposits, filed the Government suit against Mr. King, whose salary as Franklin Community's manager had been less than $17,000 a year.
(1989) Washington Call Boy Scandal
Craig J. Spence (1941 – November 10, 1989) was a Republican) lobbyist who was found dead in a Ritz-Carlton hotel room in 1989.[1][2] ...Spence was implicated in a gay call-boy ring scandal, that arranged after-hours visits to the White House, the Washington Times and other papers reported in June 1989. Afterward, Spence committed suicide in a Boston hotel....Spence's name came to national prominence in the aftermath of a June 28, 1989 article in the Washington Timesidentifying Spence as a customer of a homosexual escort service being investigated by the Secret Service, the District of Columbia Police and the United States Attorney's Office for suspected credit card fraud. The newspaper said he spent as much as $20,000 a month on the service. He had also been linked to a White House guard who has said he accepted an expensive watch from Mr. Spence and allowed him and friends to take late-night White House tours.[4]Spence entered a downward spiral in the wake of the Washington Times exposé, increasingly involving himself with call boys and crack,[5] and culminating in his July 31, 1989 arrest at the Barbizon Hotel on East 63rd St in Manhattan for criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of cocaine.[6]Months after the scandal had died down, and a few weeks before Spence was found in a room of the Boston Ritz-Carlton Hotel, he was asked who had given him the "key" to the White House. Michael Hedges and Jerry Seper of The Washington Times reported that "Mr. Spence hinted the tours were arranged by 'top level' persons", including Donald Gregg, national security adviser to Vice President George H. W. Bush at the time the tours were given.[5]When pressed to identify who it was who got him inside the White House, Spence asked "Who was it who got [long-term CIA operative] Félix Rodríguez) in to see Bush?", agreeing that he was alluding to Mr. Gregg.[5]Gregg himself dismissed the allegation as "absolute bull", according to Hedges and Seper. "It disturbs me that he can reach a slimy hand out of the sewer to grab me by the ankle like this," he told the reporters. "The allegations are totally false."[5]
I'll let you decide how credible you find any of this so far. It should be noted that many of the people implicated in these affairs -- Wilson, Singlaub, Moon, Casey, Rodriguez, Bush, Stone, and Gregg -- were also involved to varying degrees in the Iran Contra Affair, which illegally raised money for anti-communist terrorists in Central America through the use of death squads, rape, and drug sales. One does not necessarily equal the other, but sexual blackmail and human trafficking don't seem like much of a stretch.
An article by The Guardian notes:
Czechoslovakia ramped up spying on Trump in late 1980s, seeking US intel:
In summer 1987, Donald and Ivana Trump visited Moscow and Leningrad, following a personal invitation from the Soviet ambassador in Washington, Yuri Dubinin. The trip was arranged by Intourist, a travel agency that was also an undercover KGB outfit. Soon after returning from Moscow, Trump announced he was thinking of running for president. That presidential bid failed to materialise. In October 1988, on the eve of the US election, Ivana Trump visited her parents in Zlín, known at the time as Gottwaldov. According to the files she “confidently” predicted Bush’s victory to her father, who in turn passed the tip to local StB officers.“The outcome of the election confirmed the veracity of this information,” StB field agent Lt Peter Surý wrote, in a document dated 23 January 1989 and marked “secret”.The prediction came “from the highest echelons of power in the US”. Ivana was “not only a well-heeled US citizen” but moved in “very top political circles”, Surý stated....It is unclear when the KGB began a file on the future president. In Prague about 60,000 StB documents were declassified in the mid-1990s, after the collapse of communism. The StB destroyed most records. However, secret memos written by the KGB chief, Vladimir Kryuchkov, in the mid-1980s reveal that he berated his officers for their failure to cultivate top-level Americans. Kryuchkov circulated a confidential personality questionnaire to KGB heads of station abroad, setting out the qualities wanted from a potential asset.According to instructions leaked to British intelligence by the KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky, they included corruption, vanity, narcissism, marital infidelity and poor analytical skills. The KGB should focus on personalities who were upwardly mobile in business and politics, especially Americans, the document said.
Another article in the Chicago Tribune notes:
Czechoslovakia secret police file: Trump sure of presidential win — in 1996:
A year before the 1989 collapse of communism in many parts of Europe, details about Ivana Trump's 1988 visit back to her homeland were recorded in a classified police report. The Oct. 22, 1988 report claimed that Trump refused to run for president in 1988 — despite alleged pressure to do so — because he felt, at 42, he was too young. But the secret report said he intended to run in the 1996 U.S. presidential race as an independent, when he would be 50."Even though it looks like a utopia, D. TRUMP is confident he will succeed," the police report said, based on information from an unspecified source who talked to Ivana Trump's father, Milos Zelnicek, about her visit. It was unclear where the alleged "pressure" was coming from. [Note: In "Get Me Roger Stone", Stone claims he was the one who convinced Trump to run.]...Trump's first wife was born Ivana Zelnickova in 1949 in the Czechoslovak city of Gottwaldov, the former city of Zlin that just had been renamed by the Communists, who took over the country in 1948. She married Trump, her second husband, in 1977. As she kept traveling home across the Iron Curtain on a regular basis, Ivana became a tempting target for the powerful, deeply feared Czechoslovak secret police agency known as the StB.
And by at least 1989, Trump himself was in the social circle of both Iran Contra figures and the father of Epstein's alleged "madame", Ghislaine Maxwell:
(This is from a previous post I made, seen here. Some of the links are subscription only, but are provided for accuracy)
NY Daily News - May 5, 1989:
“Everybody, but everybody at the party aboard British media mogul Robert Maxwell’s yacht Wednesday night had to doff their shoes before boarding the plush-carpeted “Lady Ghislaine.” Maxwell insisted, and his guests cooperated, including Donald Trump (minus Ivana), who has a much bigger yacht and was happy to compare notes with Maxwell. [Note: This is in reference to the Kingdom 5KR, originally owned by Adnan Khashoggi, international arms dealer and uncle of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi.] There were John Tower [Republican Senator in charge of the Tower Commission, which investigated Iran Contra]; ex-Navy secretary John Lehman [Reagan appointee 1981-1987], now with Paine Webber; lawyer Tom Bolan [law partner of Roy Cohn]; literary agent Mort Janklow [clients include both Nancy and Ronald Reagan for their memoirs]; UN envoy Thomas Pickering [currently a board member at the world’s biggest pipe company, OAO TMK, in Moscow and Chairman of the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya Foundation, “a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC that supports programs to improve the health of children worldwide”]; and Peter Kalikow, owner of the New York Post [awarded the Israel Peace Medal in 1982; created a super PAC for Herman Cain that was later revealed to be entirely financed by his donations]; Maxwell’s daughter, Ghislaine, and his niece, Helene Atkin of Macmillan, the publishing house Maxwell recently took over."[Note: This sentence wasn't in the Daily News article but shows up in a St Louis Dispatch piece a week later]: “Maxwell, who weighs about 300 pounds, went over the guest list personally.""No one could tell who didn’t make the final list, but we do know that Martha Smilgis of Time was disinvited by David Adler, public relations chief at Macmillan. She wrote the profile of Maxwell which he apparently did not like.”
Who was Ghislaine’s father?
Ian Robert Maxwell "MC (10 June 1923 – 5 November 1991), born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch, was a British media proprietor and Member of Parliament (MP). Originally from Czechoslovakia, Maxwell rose from poverty to build an extensive publishing empire….Maxwell had a flamboyant lifestyle, living in Headington Hill Hall in Oxford, from which he often flew in his helicopter, and sailing in his luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. He was notably litigious and often embroiled in controversy, including about his support for Israel at the time of the 1948 Palestine war. In 1989, he had to sell successful businesses, including Pergamon Press, to cover some of his debts. In 1991, his body was discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean, having fallen overboard from his yacht. He was buried in Jerusalem. Maxwell's death triggered the collapse of his publishing empire as banks called in loans. His sons briefly attempted to keep the business together, but failed as the news emerged that the elder Maxwell had stolen hundreds of millions of pounds from his own companies' pension funds. The Maxwell companies applied for bankruptcy protection in 1992....Shortly before Maxwell's death, a former employee of Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate, Ari Ben-Menashe, approached a number of news organisations in Britain and the U.S. with the allegation that Maxwell and the Daily Mirror's foreign editor, Nicholas Davies, were both long-time agents for Mossad. Ben-Menashe also claimed that in 1986, Maxwell had told the Israeli Embassy in London that Mordechai Vanunu had given information about Israel's nuclear capability to The Sunday Times, then to the Daily Mirror. Vanunu was subsequently kidnapped by Mossad and smuggled to Israel, convicted of treason and imprisoned for eighteen years.Ben-Menashe's story was ignored at first, but eventually The New Yorker journalist Seymour Hersh repeated some of the allegations during a press conference in London held to publicise The Samson Option, Hersh's book about Israel's nuclear weapons. On 21 October 1991, two MPs, Labour's George Galloway and the Conservative's Rupert Allason (also known as espionage author Nigel West), agreed to raise the issue in the House of Commons under Parliamentary Privilege protection, which in turn allowed British newspapers to report events without fear of libel suits. Maxwell called the claims "ludicrous, a total invention" and sacked Davies.[44] A year later, in Galloway's libel settlement against Mirror Group Newspapers (in which he received "substantial" damages), Galloway's counsel announced that the MP accepted that the group's staff had not been involved in Vanunu's abduction. Galloway himself, however, referred to Maxwell as "one of the worst criminals of the century....The Maxwell companies filed for bankruptcy protection in 1992. Kevin Maxwell was declared bankrupt with debts of £400 million. In 1995, Kevin and Ian and two other former directors went on trial for conspiracy to defraud, but were unanimously acquitted by a twelve-man jury in 1996.”
Epstein's own weird history has been spoken of to some degree, and I'm not sure I have much to add at this point, but perhaps it's important in context.
Financier in sex abuse case went from math whiz to titan
He taught calculus and physics at the prestigious Dalton School, a prep school in Manhattan, from 1973 to 1975, despite not having a college degree. Attorney General William Barr's father, Donald Barr, was headmaster at the time...Epstein left Dalton in the mid-1970s for a job at Bear Stearns at the urging of a student's father who arranged a meeting with the chairman of the investment bank, according to published reports. He later began his own money-management business, J. Epstein & Co....Epstein has long obscured the source of his wealth. Even after his arrest, he refused to provide authorities with even basic information about his income and assets. His attorney said Epstein's lawyers intend to provide the information but want to make sure it is correct first. This much is clear: "He is a man of nearly infinite means," federal prosecutor Alex Rossmiller said in court....Epstein also forged a relationship with Leslie Wexner, the retail titan behind Victoria's Secret, The Limited and other store chains. He started managing Wexner's money in the late 1980s and helped straighten out the finances for a real estate development Wexner was backing in a wealthy Columbus, Ohio, suburb. It was through Wexner that [in1996] Epstein acquired his Manhattan mansion, a seven-story, 21,000-square-foot former prep school less than a block from Central Park. It has been valued at about $77 million.
Around the same time, Trump started dating Marla Maples, who was working at his Atlantic City Taj Mahal Casino:
(1988) The Untold Story of Trump Model Management (Part 1):
Donald Trump, for his part, was becoming increasingly restless, and reckless. Despite fathering 3 children and having a devoted wife, by all accounts he didn’t spend much time with any of them, preferring work and play to the routines of domestic life. In the 80’s he made at least two life changing decisions-to step out on his wife publicly, and to expand his negligible empire into Atlantic City casinos. He built Harrah’s at Trump Plaza in 1984, and a partially completed building that became Trump Castle in 1985-a property that would be managed by his first wife, Ivana. He also scooped up the Taj Mahal in 1988, which at a cost of $1.1 billion made it the most expensive casino ever built at the time.
Some weirdness starts to pop up here, at least allegedly. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer:
(10/27/83) GROUND BROKEN FOR RESORTS' 2D N.J. CASINO-HOTEL
Resorts International, which opened the city's first gambling hall 5 1/2 years ago, broke ground yesterday for a second casino-hotel that will cost $250 million to build and will contain 1,000 hotel rooms and the world's second-largest casino.
According to Wikipedia:
Resorts International was a hotel and casino company. From its origins as a paint company, it moved into the resort business in the 1960s with the development of Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and then expanded to Atlantic City, New Jersey with the opening of Resorts Casino Hotel in 1978.
So how did a paint company morph into a multimillion dollar casino company? We're going to have to go to conspiracy theorists again. Make of it what you will:
Goodfellas: The Hidden History of Resorts International:
Resorts International was largely a family affair that grew out of a company called the Mary Carter Paint Company."Mary Carter (she never existed) was pretty much a family affair controlled by Jim Crosby, two of his brothers, and his in-laws. Based in Tampa, Florida, the firm included in its directorate James Crosby, John Crosby (a plastic surgeon in Mobile, Alabama), William Crosby (a Tampa realtor), and the Murphy brothers, Henry and Tom, who'd married the Crosby daughters. Henry owned a funeral home in Trenton, New Jersey, while Tom was board chairman of Capital Cities Communications, a successful broadcasting business founded by explorer Lowell Thomas. The explorer too was an early shareholder in Mary Carter Paint, as was Republican Thomas Dewey." (Spooks, Jim Hougan, pg. 381)Acclaimed researchers Sally Denton and Roger Morris note: "... the Mary Carter Paint Company, which was widely considered to be a CIA front that laundered payments to the Cuban exile army in the early sixties..." (The Money and the Power, pg. 284).This is certainly quite plausible considering Mary Carter was then based out of Tampa, a hub for joint CIA-Syndicate efforts to assassinate Castro. As was noted before here, Tampa don Santo Trafficante, Jr. was one of the gangsters initially tapped by the CIA's notorious Office of Security to arrange for Castro's untimely demise. Trafficante, a close associate of Meyer Lansky (whom we shall return to again), had been deeply involved in Cuba's gambling operations prior to the revolution and would later become even more deeply immersed in the world heroin trade. As was noted before here, he was very close to the emerging Cuban Mafia, which provided ample recruits to the CIA during the early 1960s despite much suspicion that Trafficante was a double agent for Castro.Certainly the Mary Carter Paint Company would have been well positioned to assist Trafficante in these endeavors in Tampa. And such a connection would also explain why the corporation, in the mid-1960s (as CIA Cuban operations were winding down), abruptly sold off its paint business and boldly delved into gambling. By the end of the decade it was managing one of the most profitable casinos in the world on the Bahama's Paradise Island. What it amounts to is that by the late period James Crosby emerged as not only the CEO of Mary CarteResorts International, but as an extremely well connected figure within the GOP and beyond."... Crosby was himself uniquely situated in Republican circles: a sometime guest at the White House, he'd donated $100,000 to Nixon's 1968 campaign. He was also a friend of, and frequent host two, Bebe Rebozo (with whom he banked). Moreover, Crosby's private intelligence agency, Intertel, was even then working with White House aides and ITT executives to discredit Jack Anderson's revelations anent ITT and Chile. At the same time, Intertel was the de factocustodian of the demented billionaire Howard Hughes (his own $100,000 donation would later result in two volumes of Senate testimony in the Watergate affair). Indeed, the ties between Paradise Island and Richard Nixon's administration were of the sort that bind: Allan Butler, owner of the failing bank that was his namesake, claims the Nixon was a silent partner of Crosby's in his Bahamian ventures, sharing a healthy chunk of Paradise Island bridge revenues with yet another secret partner, Bebe Rebozo. And by by no means finally, James O. Golden, Resorts' vice-president and one of Intertel's founding spooks, had formerly served as Nixon's Secret Service shield, later taking charge of security for the Nixon forces at the GOP's 1968 convention in Miami Beach. That Paradise Island is a special place, and had a special place in the heart (or what passed for a heart) of the Nixon regime, is abundantly clear... (Spooks, Jim Hougan, pg. 180) ...And that brings us to possibly the most curious aspects of Resorts, namely its ownership of its own vast private intelligence network. It was known as Intertel, short for International Intelligence, Inc. Intertel was incorporated in 1970 as an almost wholly-owned subsidiary of Resorts International and hit the ground running. During its heyday, Intertel had an impressive roster and an international reach. It would turn up in host of intrigues throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Curiously, it had its origins with Robert Kennedy's "Get Hoffa" squad."... Intertel, known especially and remarkably for its composition of former organized crime strike force attorneys from Robert Kennedy's Justice Department... The IRS considered Intertel... 'an organized crime enterprise of some type aimed at the Bahamas,' as one account summed up the agency's view. Roberts Peloquin and William Hundley, Kennedy's top crime fighters, had joined the firm and recruited operatives from the CIA, FBI, IRS, Secret Service, and other intelligence agencies. Staffed exclusively by what one author called 'Get Hoffa agents,' it was likened into a corporate CIA.' (The Money and the Power, Sally Denton & Roger Morris, pg. 284)...Intertel's other ventures include spying of muckraker Jack Anderson) for ITT, investigating the Chicago Tylenol murders and the Bhopal disaster. Even more ominous, however, were its dealings with a shady Belgium-based private detective agency known as Agence de Recherche et d'Information (ARI). As was noted before here, ARI was linked to members of the neo-fascist terror organization known as the Westland New Post, a few of whom had also been implicated in drug trafficking and pedophile rings. Intertel reportedly hired ARI to do some work for them during the 1980s....What is of great interest to us here is Trump's third Atlantic City casino: the Taj Mahal. While now widely associated with Trump, thanks in no small part to it leading to his first bankruptcy, it was not in fact Trump who started the casino. That dubious distinction lies with Resorts International. The company had begun construction on the Taj Mahal in 1983, but had run into persistent difficulties in finishing construction in the following years. Then, in April 1986, James Crosby died suddenly. This left Resorts in turmoil (allegedly) and Trump stepped in. Trump bought a controlling stake in the company in 1987 and was promptly named its chairman of the board.Let that sink in for a moment: Donald J. Trump, the current President of the United States, was briefly the chairman of a corporation long suspected of being a CIA front, that had decades-spanning involvement with the Syndicate, numerous "rogue" financiers, various drug and arms traffickers and which owned a vast private intelligence network...."
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer:
(07/22/87) TRUMP COMPLETES THE DEAL FOR RESORTS INTERNATIONAL
Developer Donald Trump took control of Resorts International Inc. yesterday in a $79 million deal that gives him his third Atlantic City casino, including what will be the largest gaming hall in the city.Trump sealed the deal in New York with those connected to the estate of the late founder of Resorts International, James M. Crosby.Trump paid a cash price of $135 a share for 585,068 shares of Class B stock, which has 100 times the voting power of Class A stock. He is expected to make a formal tender offer for the remaining 167,230 shares of Class B stock within the next several weeks at the same $135-a-share price. Owning all the Class B stock would give him 93 percent of the company's voting power. At a board meeting immediately after the transaction with the Crosby estate, Trump was elected chairman of the board of Resorts International, replacing Henry B. Murphy, Crosby's brother-in-law, who resigned.
And his relationship with Ivana was falling apart:
(1989) Ex-Wife: Donald Trump Made Me Feel ‘Violated’ During Sex
After a painful scalp reduction surgery to remove a bald spot, Donald Trump confronted his then-wife, who had previously used the same plastic surgeon.“Your fucking doctor has ruined me!” Trump cried. What followed was a “violent assault,” according to Lost Tycoon. Donald held back Ivana’s arms and began to pull out fistfuls of hair from her scalp, as if to mirror the pain he felt from his own operation. He tore off her clothes and unzipped his pants.“Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months. Ivana is terrified… It is a violent assault,” Hurt writes. “According to versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, ‘he raped me.’”Following the incident, Ivana ran upstairs, hid behind a locked door, and remained there “crying for the rest of night.” When she returned to the master bedroom in the morning, he was there.“As she looks in horror at the ripped-out hair scattered all over the bed, he glares at her and asks with menacing casualness: ‘Does it hurt?’” Hurt writes.
In 1992, Trump would divorce Ivana. It's this same year that we find him arranging a party of 30 for himself, Jeffrey Epstein, and 28 young aspiring calendar girls:
(1992) Trump Was Alone at a 1992 Party with 28 Girls and Accused Sex Trafficker Jeffrey Epstein
Part of a “calendar girl” competition organized at Trump’s request, the party was put together by a businessman named George Houraney, who spoke with the New York Times for a story published Tuesday.Houraney was also one of many to accuse Trump of sexual harassment, this time toward his former girlfriend and business partner, Jill Harth, who described an incident in 1997 as an attempted rape by Trump.“I arranged to have some contestants fly in,” Houraney told the Times. “At the very first party, I said, ‘Who’s coming tonight? I have 28 girls coming.’ It was him and Epstein.”...Before the “calendar girl” event, Houraney warned Trump about Epstein once again.“Look, Donald, I know Jeff really well, I can’t have him going after younger girls,” Houraney recalled telling Trump in the Times interview. “He said: ‘Look I’m putting my name on this. I wouldn’t put my name on it and have a scandal.’”
[EDIT: MSNBC reports on 07/17/2019 on newly discovered footage of Trump and Epstein discussing women at a party in November of 1992.]
The Boston Globe reported:
(1992) The pageant of Donald Trump’s dreams
It was a snowy night in Manhattan, December 1992, and the festive group was embarking on a circuit of exclusive clubs after a sumptuous dinner at the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room.As the limo wove through the city, Trump discussed his views on dating, according to one of the women riding along. The billionaire casino mogul declared that “all women are bimbos” and said most were “gold diggers” who would be smart to go after men with money. Like him.Rhonda Noggle, the model who relayed the story to the Globe in an interview, said that, at that point, she had had enough. Speaking sharply to Trump, she said, she asked him to stop the limo. The car grew silent.
(1989-1995) The Untold Story of Trump Model Management (Part 1):
1989-1995 just so happens to be the same time period in which Donald Trumps world and empire was falling apart at the seams. In the beginning of the decade he was facing the end of his first marriage and a looming court battle. Despite his purportedly active dating life, by many accounts Trump was being rejected by many, if not most, of the women he pursued-including Carla Bruni and Jill Hearth. Marla Maples, after years of being the secret mistress and repeated rounds of being dumped and publicly humiliated by Trump, was starting to lose her patience. And the big gamble he took in Atlantic City was, by all accounts, failing miserably-a direct result of his jaw droppingly awful business practices and general incompetence. In 1991, his Taj Mahal Casino filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 1992, he again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy again, this time on his Trump Plaza Hotel (also in Atlantic City), at the time owing $550 million dollars. Recall that he would report an almost 1 billion dollar loss on his 1995 tax returns, according to the copies obtained by the New York Times. Indeed, the early 90’s were not a very good era for Donald Trump. In light of this fact, it’s worth noting that the sexual assault allegations against him are all clustered within this very time frame. [Note: This article was written in 2016, prior to more allegations]...By the time “New York Magazine” did a front page profile of him in 1988, Casablancas reputation for bedding young models was established and begrudgingly accepted (a price to pay in exchange for his “genius”) within the New York social scene, but the expose came as a shock to many outside the bubble. John Casablancas would soon find out that he was not as untouchable as he thought he was. In the article-which ran under the title “Girl Crazy”-Casablancas was portrayed as a champagne guzzling pervert, singularly dedicated to the “new look” department of Elite where he spent his days ogling the scantily clad, sometimes naked bodies of teenage girls. In light of Donald Trump’s more alarming comments and decisions around his daughter Ivanka, this quote stands out:"Casablancas talked about his seventeen year old daughter, Cecile. He said Cecile had been solicited by a photographer last summer on a beach in Ibiza. The photographer asked her to pose in a bikini, and Casablancas raced over to try to get a $2,000 fee for the shot. “She’s got a great little body” he told his models."Another quote that brings a chuckle and a nod of recognition in this story is Casablancas’s bizarre pride over never having changed a diaper. Donald Trump would make similar boasts in a Howard Stern interview a few years later. Compelling proof this is not, but I do believe it’s a hint at the kind of Don Juan persona that Don, far from a Juan, actually a dejected, balding husband with a crumbling empire....But the scandal did not end there, nor did it begin. Less than a month earlier 60 minutes aired a prime-time special on the abuses of underage girls in the modeling industry. Investigative reporter Craig Pyes portrayed the modeling industry as infested with agents who were notorious hustlers and playboys. His report revealed that both Claude Haddad- the head of European scouting for Ford- and Ford’s Paris-based agent Jean-Luc Brunel had been accused of horrific sexual misconduct by many models. [Note: Brunel's name appears multiple times on Epstein's flight manifests.] The special aired the interviews of dozens of women who accused both Brunel and Haddad of a litany of crimes, ranging from racist invective towards black models to violent rape. And in fact the hidden camera footage captured in filming the special caught it all- from Xavier lamenting about n**er models, to Haddad chuckling about drugging and raping 13 year old girls. According to Model At a retreat soon after the one-two punch delivered by the coverage, Haddad, Jean Luc Brunel and Casablancas were once again overheard (albeit not taped this time around) laughing about their crimes. Alternatively they were angry when confronted by interim scouting manager Trudi Tapscott - ”I’m a man and I have needs, I will not apologize for that!” Casablancas is said to have declared....Over time Donald Trump would emerge from the ruins of his empire with a new approach to business, and a new source of income-in 1996 he bought the rights to the Miss Universe franchise, and became the central figure in the running of these pageants. And in 1999 he started a modeling agency - T models, later changed to Trump Model Management. The correlation of interests is quite clear-for a man awkward around women but dependent on his public image saying otherwise, a stable of women under his employ was a way to boost his image-and even better, he was able to lock all of these women into non disclosure agreements, ensuring that his behavior with them had little chance of becoming public knowledge. It also appeared to have served as a useful tool regarding his business transactions-which, in the aftermath of his bankruptcy, were increasingly dependent on some less than savory characters. How he did this, and the breadth of this activity, will be explored in the next installment. But for the time being, there is one final aspect of this story that is breathtaking, and speaks more to the character of Donald Trump than anything else.
